  • Winter 2023 Dean's Message Jan 6, 2023 4:01 PM As I reflect on my first semester as Dean of the Schmidthorst College of Business, I would like to start by thanking all of you who have reached out over the past semester to welcome me to this wonderful community. Your insights, guidance and support have made this transition so much easier and have confirmed my initial thoughts on the special environment that I have been granted the opportunity to lead. I know many of you have been able to attend some of the many events we hosted this fall, but for those who were not able to make it to campus, I will share some of the highlights.

  • Alumni Spotlight: Peggy Schmeltz, Former Chair of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Investors Corporation and Community Philanthropist Jan 6, 2023 3:07 PM Peggy Schmelz was an inspiration to many in Bowling Green and the surrounding region, not just for her amazing business career, but for her dedication and impact to serving her community. She was an advocate for lifelong education and giving back to the community. On Dec. 10, 2022, Schmelz passed away surrounded by her family.

  • Research Impact: Doctoral Students Publish on Critical Issues for the Public Good Jan 6, 2023 10:30 AM Just three years ago, the doctorate in organization development and change (DODC) was launched in the Schmidthorst College of Business and has quickly become the most inquired about graduate program at BGSU.   • Welcome Kurstyn Loeffler – Director, Paul J. Hooker Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Jan 4, 2023 10:05 AM Kurstyn Loeffler steps into the role as director of the Paul J. Hooker Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership with a lifelong passion for and expertise in entrepreneurship. She has been involved in the world of entrepreneurship for nearly 20 years, managing a brick-and-mortar retail store after graduating college and then purchasing, owning and operating that business. Simultaneously, she worked as the assistant director of the Family Business Center at the University of Toledo, providing resources and educational opportunities to family and privately held businesses within the community.

  • Research Impact: The Impact on Coworkers of Working With a Narcissist Jan 4, 2023 9:46 AM This fall, Dr. Truit Gray published research titled “Coworker narcissism: Employee emotional and behavioral reactions as moderated by bottom-line mentality and trait competitiveness” in the Journal of Management (Financial Times top 50). In the research study, Dr. Gray and his coauthors examined the impact that working with a narcissistic coworker has on an employee’s emotions and behavioral intentions.

  • Schmidthorst College of Business Student Earns First Place in Fall 2022 International Capsim Competition Jan 3, 2023 11:59 AM BGSU Schmidthorst College of Business student Reece Stammen, a student focusing on information systems, recently earned first place in the Fall 2022 Capsim Challenge. Stammen’s achievement marks the 11th semester in a row a BGSU student has earned finalist status in this international competition. BGSU has more Challenge finalists (16) than any other university worldwide. Stammen competed in the daylong finals event against students from top universities across the world.

  • Alumni Spotlight: Erin Schwiebert, Advanced Learning and Development Consultant, Marathon Petroleum Company Aug 11, 2022 12:00 PM Erin Schwiebert works as an advanced learning and development consultant at Marathon Petroleum Company LP (MPC) in Findlay, Ohio. Schwiebert is a two-time graduate of the Schmidthorst College of Business at Bowling Green State University and serves on the college’s Young Alumni Board, as well as the Findlay Community Diversity Equity and Inclusion Advisory Board, Findlay City Schools Diversity Equity and Belonging Committee, the Business Affiliates Board of the University of Findlay and the University of Findlay College of Business Advisory Board.

  • Dean's Co-curricular Series Fills Education Gaps With Industry-Recognized Certifications Aug 11, 2022 12:00 PM Technological change continues to increase along with the need for students to enhance their university education with application-specific skills. The dean's co-curricular series aims to support students in navigating the many industry-based digital badge and certification options through a fun and engaging atmosphere. Each month, the series will explore digital badges and certifications related to a common theme as a small cohort of students. Themes will include Lean Six Sigma, Microsoft Excel, cybersecurity, ethical leadership, Salesforce and Tableau. Each digital badge or certification will be led by an expert in that area and sponsored by the Schmidthorst College of Business to ensure access for all students. By enhancing their skills through these digital certifications, students will be able to demonstrate to employers both their drive for lifelong learning, as well as technical expertise on these platforms. This program will complement the experiential learning and digital badges already integrated into the curriculum, further ensuring our graduates are prepared to be leaders in their future careers.

Schmeltz Atrium Aug 11, 2022 12:00 PM This year, we are looking forward to hosting a wide variety of corporate partners in the William F. and Peggy L. Schmeltz Atrium as we enhance the opportunity for students to engage with industry leaders and learn more about potential business careers. Working across departments and with our active research centers and institutes, we will share with students from across campus the breadth of choices available for students who choose to pursue both majors and minors in business-related fields. Employers participating in an Employer Spotlight will share information about the organization's culture, unique industry perspectives, application of business techniques and their personal career paths to inspire students on their journeys. These spotlights will support students in the development of their professional networks and, hopefully, in preparing them for internships and full-time employment.   • Online MBA Passes the 200th Graduate Milestone! Aug 11, 2022 12:00 PM The online MBA was launched two and a half years ago with a starting cohort of 32 students. We are excited to announce that after summer commencement, we have graduated 275 students from the program. Due to the online format, we have been able to extend our impact across the globe. We are proud to have new alumni from Washington state to Thailand. By the end of 2022, the program expects to have supported over 300 students in earning their MBA from the Schmidthorst College of Business.

  • Schmidthorst Student Extends BGSU Success in Spring 2022 Capsim International Global Competition Aug 11, 2022 12:00 PM BGSU Schmidthorst College of Business student Jacob Barga recently placed fifth in the Spring 2022 Capsim Foundation Challenge. Jacob's participation as a finalist marks the 10th semester in a row a BGSU student has earned finalist status in this competition. Worldwide, no other university has more Capsim Challenge finalists. Jacob competed against others from India, Turkey, Malaysia and the United States.

  • Undergraduate Programs Growing While Increasing Student Support and Access Aug 11, 2022 12:00 PM One of the strategic priorities for BGSU and the Schmidthorst College of Business is to serve our community through access to high-quality learning experiences. This year, we are working with partners across campus to increase supports for deciding students interested in exploring business. BGSU is also expanding access to the signature Life Design program where students have the opportunity to learn design thinking and work with a coach to apply these principles to personalize their University experience and design their unique career path. We are working on updating our introduction to business course to integrate core Life Design principles so all business students will build this competency.

  • Four Alumni Inducted into the Paul J. Hooker Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Hall of Fame Apr 21, 2022 9:30 AM Four Bowling Green State University alumni were inducted into the Paul J. Hooker Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Hall of Fame on April 21, 2022. The inductees are Julie Brandle’93, Bruce Fisher’68, Mike Hart ‘94, and Eric Nowlin’82. The Hall of Fame recognizes BGSU graduates, honorary degree holders, and members of the regional community who have achieved distinction for founding, leading, or building a new business enterprise for five years or more.

  • Associate Dean Awarded Inaugural Chan Hahn Professorship in Supply Chain Management Apr 20, 2022 2:30 PM Janet Harley, PhD, Professor and Associate Dean of Schmidthorst Graduate Programs, Faculty Affairs, Budgeting and Research, was awarded the first Chan Hahn Professorship in Supply Chain Management. This endowed professorship was created to honor Dr. Chan Hahn, a well-respected advisor, career coach and father figure to a generation of BGSU supply chain and procurement operations students.

Vogt Outstanding Senior Award, named in honor of a former dean of the Schmidthorst College. The Vogt award recognizes the top graduating senior who has demonstrated superior scholarship, participation, leadership, and excellence in campus and community activities.

Paige Redlin was an extremely dedicated and motivated MBA student. This is the story of Wen Wang from Inner Mongolia, China, who is graduating from the University in May, overcoming extensive challenges of language and cultural barriers as well as studying disciplines that are not commonly thought of as typical fields for women. Wang is specializing in management information systems and business analytics & intelligence. The May 2018 graduate took advantage of many opportunities to get engaged with the College of Business and BGSU.

The BGSU Student Managed Fund operated as part of FINANCE 4360 – Portfolio Management. According to finance professor, Dr. Stephen Rush, who teaches the course, “The goal of the class is to beat the S&P 500 index (a benchmark widely used in the investment management industry) on a risk-adjusted basis.” He adds, “The positive relationship between risk and return means that increasing the level of risk may increase total return but also increases the threshold for risk-adjusted returns.”

BGSU was one of five teams that advanced to the finals out of 20 teams competing. Although they did not win the competition, this is the second year in a row that the BGSU team made it to the finals.

  • It’s All in the ‘Design’ for Solving Business Problems Innovatively Oct 25, 2016 8:18 AM When students come to Bowling Green State University to study business, they know they have unique opportunities that many other undergraduate business programs don’t offer; it’s not a “traditional” business education. BGSU is one of the few universities in the country to have as part of its undergraduate business curriculum an Applied Business Experience (BizX) lab program, a series of hands-on, experiential one-credit hour courses which begins the first year and then builds on the prior BizX courses through senior year. What we think of as traditional science lab activities are transferred to a business setting, allowing students to learn by doing and blend their creativity with visual, analytical skills to solve problems and differentiate companies from their competitors.

These partnerships allow undergraduate accounting students at these respective universities to continue their education at a highly-recognized university through a BGSU Master of Accountancy (MAcc) Scholarship which awards a full tuition waiver and a graduate assistant (GA) stipend to a selected student. Partial tuition waivers and GA stipends are offered to those qualified students not selected.

BGSU is one of the few universities in the country to have as part of its undergraduate business curriculum an Applied Business Experience (BizX) lab program, a series of hands-on, experiential one-credit hour courses which begins the first year and then builds on the prior BizX courses through senior year.

BGSU was one of five teams that advanced to the finals out of 20 teams competing. Although they did not win the competition, this is the second year in a row that the BGSU team made it to the finals.

Last year, four faculty members from TPU came to BGSU to see firsthand how we teach our statistics, operations research, and MIS classes, so they could adopt similar teaching methods and materials in their classrooms. The TPU/BGSU agreement includes a 3 + 1 educational program where two cohorts of fourth-year TPU students will arrive at BGSU in 2017 to complete their dual undergraduate business degrees. They spend their first three years taking classes at TPU, some of which were taught by BGSU faculty this summer.

Dr. Brennan joined BGSU as an associate professor in 1974 and taught business law classes until his retirement in 1996. Over the course of his tenure at BGSU and after retiring, he published dozens of articles and numerous textbooks.

The finance department implemented a new insurance specialization last fall and created an institute and advisory board to help grow its program.

Miller was selected to be the global procurement intern at the Detroit, Michigan refinery. During her internship, she was exposed to many different aspects of global procurement.

  • Meet Student Ambassador Michael Gallagher, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC Mar 17, 2016 11:11 AM Michael Gallagher, senior at BGSU, spent his fall semester working a co-op at Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, LLC in Elyria, Ohio. Bendix is a company that is constantly growing, and specializes in manufacturing braking systems for trucks and other commercial vehicles. During his tenure, he was a co-op in the Global Purchasing Excellences department, and his job was to assist buyers on his team with their daily tasks.

  • Partnerships in Master of Accountancy Program Yields Additional Students from Other Universities Mar 17, 2016 9:59 AM The Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program at BGSU draws students from all over to participate in their program mainly because of its reputation and prestige. BGSU is one of 171 universities worldwide to hold the highest accreditation in both business and accounting programs. This accreditation is from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and has ranked BGSU in the top 2% of the world.

  • BGSU Sales Team Earns Victory at Inaugural Sales Competition at University of Toledo Mar 17, 2016 9:50 AM BGSU students Phil Rich and Jessica Miller brought home a first place team finish at the first annual University of Toledo Sales Competition on February 25-27. BGSU tied for first with Baylor University. There were 30 universities competing in this event from around the country, with each school entering one student in the lower division and one student in the upper division.

  • New Assistant Marketing Professor Joins Department Mar 4, 2016 3:22 PM This year our department welcomed Dr. Fei Weisstein who came from The University of Texas – Pan American where she was also an assistant professor of marketing. She earned her Ph.D. in marketing in 2009 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an MBA from San Francisco State University.

  • Student Marketing Chapter Among Best in the World Mar 4, 2016 3:21 PM They did it again in 2015! For the second consecutive year, the BGSU chapter of the American Marketing Association earned the Bronze Chapter Award. The Bronze status placed our chapter in the top 5% of all chapters in the world (out of 350 chapters). 2015 was also the tenth consecutive year the BGSU organization has been honored as an Outstanding AMA Chapter.

  • Marketing Department Presented Awards to Top 2 Graduating Seniors Mar 4, 2016 3:19 PM The Department of Marketing honored its top graduating senior in two specializations – marketing and sales and services marketing. The criteria to be selected by the faculty included overall GPA, involvement in student organizations as well as internship experience. The two winners were Kelsey Music (left) in marketing and Jane Swartz (right) in sales and services marketing. Dr. Bob Wu, retired chair, presented their awards at a reception last spring.

  • Christine Seiler Honored with Women of Distinction Award Mar 4, 2016 2:53 PM The Women of Distinction Award honors a student, staff member or faculty member who demonstrates excellence, ingenuity and the ability to overcome barriers that still exist for women. Criteria use to select women for this honor include being a lifelong advocate for promoting equity for women and girls, serve as a mentor/role model and are dedicated to empowering women and girls to achieve their goals.

  • Marketing Students Pitch Their Business Ideas to Investors in The Hatch™ 2016 Mar 4, 2016 2:49 PM BGSU students have the chance to launch businesses through a “Shark Tank” type of event called The Hatch™. After working with a Falcon Mentor, they pitch their business ideas to a group of Alumni Investors. This year, The Hatch™ is adding several new elements. The program, which is touted as a best in class practice, opened up the competition to graduate students and is allowing teams of up to three students to compete. In addition, The Scrambler event was held in November to narrow the highly competitive applicant pool.

  • College Announces Two Department Chairs and Welcomes New Faculty Members Aug 17, 2015 10:12 AM With the new academic year comes some changes to the College of Business with two new chairs and several full-time faculty. Dr. Peter VanderHart, professor, was appointed chair of the economics department, replacing Dr. Mary Ellen Benedict who retired in the spring. Dr. Susan Kleine was named the interim chair of the marketing department, replacing Dr. Bob Wu who also retired. Dr. Kleine is an associate professor and has been serving as the Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at the University.

  • High School Teachers Can Earn Professional Development Credits through College of Business Aug 17, 2015 9:49 AM BGSU’s College of Business continues going beyond business as usual. We have initiated many programs and activities that differentiate us from other business schools. One of these new programs allows high school business teachers to earn two professional development units by attending a workshop being offered at locations around the state on the topic of financial literacy. This initiative is in collaboration with the BGSU College of Education which will oversee the workshop content.

  • The Hatch™ Takes Flight Across the Globe Aug 17, 2015 9:35 AM With the huge success of BGSU’s unique entrepreneurial program The Hatch™, other universities across the globe have contacted our Dallas-Hamilton Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership about assistance in starting up a similar program at their institutions. As a result of the high interest, the Dallas-Hamilton Center is beta testing a Hatch licensing program with ten other universities - two in Asia, two in Europe, four in the U.S. and two local community colleges.

  • Insurance Specialization Added to Business Program Aug 17, 2015 9:30 AM Due to a projected strong job growth in the insurance industry, the Department of Finance is now offering a new specialization in insurance, along with a minor in insurance. At the national level, more than half of insurance professionals are projected to retire by 2025, creating ample opportunities for entry and career advancement for insurance graduates. According to a recent workforce study by Regionomics, based in Columbus, the insurance industry in the state of Ohio alone will require approximately 26,000 new workers to fill positions open between now and 2020. The state of Ohio ranks seventh in the nation with over 250 insurance companies and 100,000 employees.

  • College of Business Hatches Entrepreneur Jul 20, 2015 2:43 PM Jerrod Witt was destined to become an entrepreneur. “Jerrod was the little kid who got into everything!” exclaimed his mother. “He was always taking things apart and putting them back together in an unusual way but with a purpose. I knew from the time Jerrod was very young that he was going to become an entrepreneur,” she added.

  • Dr. Sullivan Selected for 2015 Award for Excellence Jul 20, 2015 2:40 PM Management Professor, Dr. Sherry Sullivan, has again been honored for her scholarly contributions. She has been chosen as an Outstanding Reviewer for Career Development International in the Emerald Literati Network 2015 Awards for Excellence. Only two reviewers were chosen for this honor.

  • Organization Development Executive Students Learn Important Life Lessons from Trip to France Jul 20, 2015 2:28 PM One of the great experiences students have in the Executive Master of Organization Development (EMOD) program is an international field study tour. An intensive one-week study abroad program was added in 2014 to provide a global perspective to the program. Similar to last year, the cohort of executive graduate students was impressed with what they saw and learned from this unique experience.

  • College Helps Organize Business Analytics Symposium in China; Educational Program Created Jul 20, 2015 2:14 PM BGSU’s business analytics program is being recognized internationally as a U.S. leader in this data driven field of study because of its annual business analytics symposium and the specialization the College of Business offers. Tianjin Polytechnic University (TPU) in China asked BGSU professor and chair of the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research, Dr. Arthur Yeh, to assist that university in organizing a business analytics symposium similar to ours as well as present as a speaker.

  • Economics Distinguished Professor Honored By Carnegie Mellon Jul 14, 2015 7:57 AM Not only has Dr. Mary Ellen Benedict received numerous honors as an economics faculty member at BGSU, but she was recently presented an alumni association award by the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Benedict was selected for the Distinguished Alumni Award based on her outstanding achievements.

SCMI membership for 2015-2016 has grown to include 20 companies, including three new companies - Worthington Industries, Dana Holding Corporation, and United Technologies Aerospace Systems.

  • Faculty Honored for Excellence by Leadership Council May 18, 2015 11:00 AM The College of Business Leadership Council created Faculty Excellence Awards to recognize outstanding faculty accomplishments in teaching, engaging with industry to provide experiential learning, and using technology to improve learning outcomes. This was the second year for the Leadership Council to honor the outstanding contributions made by faculty to achieve the Council’s vision. Teams of students go out into the local community and find a services-oriented business or organization to study customer and employee interactions. Students prepare a detailed service blueprint as a graded assignment and have 10 minutes to present the highlights of their service blueprints and service improvement recommendations to a panel of judges.

  • Employers Impressed with Student Performance at Speed Interviews Apr 29, 2015 12:15 PM Business students at BGSU get workforce ready by preparing for job interviews as part of the marketing curriculum. Each semester students enrolled in the Introduction to Marketing (MKT 2010) course learn how to “sell” themselves with a two-minute “elevator pitch” to business employers in an event called Speed Interviews. This event is the highlight of the course which teaches students how to “package” themselves much like the concepts they learn through the course in marketing a product. They move from employer to employer after their two-minute pitch and three-minute employer feedback.

  • Sales Education Foundation Names BGSU Among Top Sales Programs in U.S. Apr 27, 2015 10:45 AM In the upcoming 2015 edition of its annual publication, BGSU is named a “Top University Sales Program” by the Sales Education Foundation. According to the Foundation, these university programs are recognized for preparing students for careers in professional selling and helping to elevate the sales profession.

For the second consecutive year, the BGSU chapter of the American Marketing Association has earned the Bronze Chapter Award. The Bronze status places our chapter in the top 5% of all chapters in the world (more than 350 chapters). This is also the tenth consecutive year the BGSU organization has been honored as an Outstanding AMA Chapter.

  • High School Business Teacher Has Passion for BGSU Business Program; One Reason is The Hatch Apr 16, 2015 10:45 AM Even though he is not a BGSU alum, high school business teacher Phil Forshey knows the quality of the business program at BGSU and encourages all of his students to enroll here, even his own daughters. Forshey teaches at Canton South High School in northeast Ohio, and “practices what he preaches.” His oldest daughter, Alivia, is currently a student at BGSU and his younger daughter, Savanna (“Vanni”), has been admitted to BGSU to study business in the fall.

  • Students “Hatch” a Deal with Investors to Launch Startups Apr 16, 2015 9:30 AM The Stroh Center was packed with 3,500 cheering fans anxious to see which of the nine student entrepreneurs would convince Falcon Alumni Investors to fund their business ideas at The Hatch™. After presenting their business ideas “Shark Tank-” style, two of the Hatchlings were successful in obtaining investments and four others received investor support to “hatch” their proposed business venture.

  • Students “Sell” Their Way to National Sales Competition; Ludwig Finishes in the Top 12 Apr 15, 2015 10:45 AM BGSU has a long tradition of excellence when competing against the best sales talent in the country at the National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC). The top two winners of the BGSU Sales Competition, Andrew Ludwig and Amy Wolf, competed at Kennesaw State University in Georgia April 7-10 and performed very well again this year. In fact, Ludwig earned his way into the semifinal round and placed in the top 12 out of 147 students who competed for the national title.

Neil Roache ‘96, Vice President, Investment Strategy and Private Markets for Exelon Corp. in Chicago, was the winner of the 2nd Annual Investor Intelligence Award for Alpha Generation. The first year’s winner of this award was BGSU alumnus Leo Svoboda ’08, senior portfolio manager, UPS Group Trust.

  • Michael McGranaghan Honored by University For Outstanding Achievements Mar 17, 2015 3:30 PM Bowling Green State University honored one accomplished graduate from each of the seven colleges at the 2015 BGSU College Alumni Awards held March 7. Michael McGranaghan, a 1980 business graduate, was the alumnus recognized for the College of Business. In a career at Johnson and Johnson spanning more than 32 years, McGranaghan made significant contributions to the enterprise, including senior finance leadership roles in each segment of the business as well as procurement.

Business students Alex Batt and James Knippen represented BGSU in the Foundation for Financial Service Professionals (FSP) 2015 Industry Issues Competition. The competition offers colleges and universities the chance to explore important hot topics in the financial services profession. BGSU has established a number of Learning Communities in residence halls to help in the transition and build a sense of “community” amongst the residents. Now freshmen and sophomores who are interested in studying business have the opportunity to live with other business students in a new theme community called The Business District.

  • College Loses Retired Economics Professor Mar 9, 2015 2:30 PM The College lost a retired faculty member and former chair of the economics department last month. J. David Reed, professor of economics, taught at BGSU for 37 years and served as chair for 8 years. He was hired in 1968 and appointed a full professor of economics in 1978. Dr. Reed retired from the University in 2005. During his tenure at BGSU, he traveled overseas where he helped to establish the environmental economic policy in Estonia.

  • Alumnus Uses Business Expertise to Launch Nonprofit For Advanced Cancer Patients Feb 16, 2015 12:30 PM We usually think of entrepreneurs as business school graduates that launch for-profit businesses, but a 1997 BGSU marketing graduate was faced with a profound, life-changing experience that led him to use his business expertise, marketing savvy, and passion to launch a nonprofit organization in 2012. Troy Haslinger founded a nonprofit called Life Is Good No Matter What to honor his 39-year-old sister, Holly, who died from colon cancer, leaving behind a husband and three children.

  • University Honors 1982 Business Graduate for Distinguished Achievements Jan 20, 2015 2:00 PM Alicia Fernandez-Mott did not take the traditional route to becoming successful. As a mono-lingual Spanish speaking first grader in a Texas school district that only spoke English, Fernandez-Mott dropped out of school in the 10th grade, traveling around the country as a migrant agricultural worker. She later received her general equivalency diploma at age 30 and enrolled and graduated from BGSU with a business degree at the age of 38.

  • Recruitment for Fall Enrollment Shows Strong Results; College of Business Day is January 23 Jan 20, 2015 12:30 PM With strong recruitment efforts continuing, the College is seeing an increased number of applications for fall 2015 with high school students who are performing academically higher. Applications from prospective students, and housing deposits are up in the College of Business compared to 2014.

  • BGSU Alumnus to Lead California’s Business Development Efforts in China Jan 16, 2015 1:30 PM Ken Petrilla’s renowned international banking experience has led to California Governor Jerry Brown selecting him to lead his state’s business development efforts with China. Petrilla was recently named the executive director of the California-China Office of Trade and Investment, an agency Governor Brown created in conjunction with the Bay Area Council in 2013 to serve as a central office for California companies interested in entering or expanding in China as well as promoting and facilitating Chinese investment into California. According to a statement, the governor’s senior jobs advisor says Petrilla is “one of the most experienced international banking executives in California.”

  • CBA Rewards Point Program Continues to Engage Students; New Top Prize Added Jan 16, 2015 1:15 PM The intent of the College of Business Rewards Point Program is to motivate students to engage with the College through participating in designated activities and rewarding students with a prize depending on the number of points accumulated. After two and a half years, the results of the CBA Rewards Point Program continue to be highly successful.

  • Sultz Honored with Financial Executive International Award Jan 16, 2015 1:00 PM Chad Sultz is a senior finance and accounting student who was selected to receive the Toledo Chapter’s Financial Executive International (FEI) Award. Sultz is a 4.0 student from Fremont, Ohio, who is working this semester as a tax intern with Rehmann and will work at Cooper Tire this summer. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in August, Sultz will enter the BGSU Master of Accountancy program in the fall.

  • Hatchlings Selected for The Hatch 2015 Jan 13, 2015 2:00 PM Eighty student applications were narrowed to ten of the best business ideas to compete for investor funding in The Hatch™ 2015. The Dallas-Hamilton Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership announced the 10 Hatchlings at the Global Entrepreneurship Week event on November 20. These Hatchlings are paired with an Alumni Mentor to make a business presentation in April to a panel of Falcon Investors in an event similar to the hit television show “Shark Tank.”

  • Students Connect with Alum at NetJets to Learn About Possible Sales Careers Dec 19, 2014 2:15 PM Our business students have unique and valuable opportunities beyond the traditional classroom to connect with employers and alumni and learn about their businesses up close. A great example of this is a recent trip that BGSU students took to the NetJets aviation operations in Columbus. The Senior Vice President and Head of Sales for NetJets, Patrick Gallagher, is an alumnus of BGSU. He contacted Christine Seiler, who teaches the professional sales course (MKT 4400) and is the BGSU sales team coach, to discuss future recruitment of our sales students at his company.

  • A Sacrifice for Education: Marvin Njoroge’s Parents Made Enormous Sacrifices to Educate Their Children Dec 19, 2014 11:30 AM Marvin Njoroge, graduating this weekend, came to BGSU from Kenya, a country in the eastern part of Africa in the spring of 2010. His parents instilled the importance of education in him from a very young age, and Marvin tributes his success to the sacrifices made by his parents.

  • Dr. Dwayne Gremler Recognized with Most Prestigious Honor in Services Marketing Dec 16, 2014 2:00 PM Internationally renowned and recognized as an Outstanding Marketing Teacher by the Academy of Marketing Science and Master Teacher by the Marketing Management Association, Dr. Dwayne Gremler, a Fulbright Scholar, has added another prestigious award to his list of honors. Dr. Gremler, Professor of Marketing, was presented the 2014 Christopher Lovelock Career Contributions Award given annually by the American Marketing Association’s Services Marketing Special Interest Group (SERVSIG). According to SERVSIG, this international award is given to “the individual whose teaching, research, and service have had the greatest long-term impact on the development of the services discipline.” This is the highest award presented in the field of services marketing.

  • Paul DePalma, a graduate of the Executive Master of Organization Development Program, is Owner and CEO of ADEPT Performance Systems Dec 16, 2014 2:00 PM Paul DePalma began college as a pre-med student at Boston College. He was quickly drawn toward business and ultimately ended up majoring in economics.

  • Holiday Traditions in Other Countries Dec 16, 2014 1:58 PM We are familiar with the American traditions of the holiday season with Christmas trees, Santa Claus, shopping, decorations, and special foods. It is interesting to read about how others around the world celebrate the holidays. A group of seven students from Puerto Rico are attending BGSU for the Master of Accountancy program. Two of them share their country’s holiday traditions in a related story.

She has worked at the front reception desk of the undergrad office in between the purchasing co-ops she has had. Knapke just graduated in December with two specializations – accounting and supply chain. Because of her co-ops during her college career, she was offered a position at Emerson Climate Technologies before graduation.

  • Winners of SMI Service Blueprint Student Competition Announced Dec 12, 2014 8:15 AM Learning about service marketing goes beyond the typical classroom materials. Dr. Dwayne Gremler’s Service Marketing course (MKT 4050) requires teams of students to go out into the local community and find a services-oriented business or organization to study customer and employee interactions. Then the students prepare a detailed service blueprint as a graded assignment and winners selected by Dr. Gremler.

  • Marketing Course Helps Prepare Students for Employer Job Interviews Dec 11, 2014 8:00 AM The College of Business curriculum goes beyond the traditional classroom experience. Each semester students enrolled in the Introduction to Marketing (MKT 2010) course learn how to “sell” themselves with a two-minute “elevator pitch” to business employers in an event called Speed Interviews. This event is the highlight of the course which teaches students how to “package” themselves much like the concepts they learn through the course in marketing a product. They moved from employer to employer after their two-minute pitch and three-minute employer feedback.

The BGSU team succeeded by placing third in the International Institute for Business Development (IIBD) Case Competition held at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.

  • Our Students Are Workforce-Ready Nov 21, 2014 2:00 PM The BGSU College of Business goes beyond business as usual to prepare our students to be successful in their business careers. Nearly 100 students participated in one of the dean’s fall workshops. The Dean’s Guide to Practical Business consists of six two-hour workshops that cover dining etiquette, interviewing, networking, dressing for success, business travel, and dining with wine. The Dean’s Golf Workshop includes five two-hour sessions, such as putting, driving, and swinging, and concludes with participation in a golf scramble hosted by the Supply Chain Management Association. Through this workshop, students can successfully participate in company golf outings where business networking is common.

Domestically, he started a sleeping bag company and a pasta company, Fettuccine Bros., which he sold to Kraft, Inc. who changed the name to DiGiorno.

The College of Business has agreements with several universities in Europe and Asia where students can study abroad one or two semesters. BGSU has one of the larger undergraduate education abroad programs compared to other universities and works with students as early as their freshman year to develop an academic schedule over four years to allow time for an education abroad experience.

  • Ludwig and Wolf are Winners of the BGSU Sales Competition Nov 17, 2014 10:30 AM The top three winners of the BGSU Sales Competition were announced at the Sales Awards Banquet held in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Traditionally, the BGSU Sales Competition has been highly competitive, but this year the competition was especially fierce with first and second place winners’ scores separated by two-tenths of a point. Winning the competition was Andrew Ludwig, a marketing student, with Amy Wolf, who is specializing in sales and services marketing, earning second place. These two students win an automatic berth to the National Collegiate Sales Competition in April. John Rich, majoring in liberal studies, captured third place and will serve as an alternate in case one of the top two can’t compete.

He wanted to expand the non-profit outside of his state and partner with other universities. He contacted College of Business Dean Ray Braun who connected Hooker to current College of Business student Luke Sims, a senior specializing in marketing and entrepreneurship to collaborate in launching this recreational sports program on campus.

The seniors heard their “Last Lecture” from the professor they selected, Kirk Kern, instructor in the marketing department and director of the Dallas-Hamilton Center for Entrepreneurship. Kern’s lecture was titled “Wisdom from a Wise Guy” and took the students through a brief history of his early days in the radio business and ended with his current role in the College of Business. Gene Richter Scholarship award out of ten national scholarships presented.   • Two Graduating International Students Give High Praise to BGSU May 6, 2014 4:23 PM We hear about the great experience our American students have in the College of Business, but what about the perspective from students who travel far from their native countries to come to Bowling Green? Why did they choose this midwestern university as a place to obtain their business education? Two international students, Evangelos Lefkonikiatis and Andreas Fylaktou, hail from Cyprus, a small island country east of Greece. They chose to study at BGSU for two main reasons - the College of Business’s national recognition and good recommendations from BGSU alumni. After completing their undergraduate business degrees in May 2014, they both have high praise for their college education.

  • Business Students Getting “FIT” Before Interviewing with Job Recruiters May 5, 2014 1:34 PM Being “FIT” takes on another meaning in the College of Business besides being physically fit. It is about being professionally prepared to interview with employers. Based on employer feedback, the Business Career Accelerator has created a new online initiative which is designed to prepare students for the highest level of professionalism when engaging and interviewing with employers. “FIT” stands for Finest Individual Talent and incoming freshmen, starting in the fall, will be required to become certified prior to any interviews for employment.

  • CBA Graduate Earns Two Prestigious National Investor Honors May 1, 2014 2:10 PM Leo Svoboda, a 2008 BGSU graduate with a degree in economics/financial economics, is one of six winners of the 2014 Investor Intelligence Awards recognizing the most outstanding and innovative Corporate Plan Sponsors in North America. Nominations were submitted by nearly 800 asset allocators and additional feedback was solicited from nearly 600 asset managers.   • BGSU Student Entrepreneurs Developing Business Presentations for "The Hatch" Apr 29, 2014 1:34 PM Twelve innovative and driven student finalists are working with highly successful business mentors on developing their presentations to present to Falcon Investors during “The Hatch” set for Wednesday, April 9, at 7:00pm in the Grand Ballroom, Bowen-Thompson Student Union. This event is similar to the popular “Shark Tank” television program and students present to the investors in front of a live audience of more than 600 people. BGSU is the only university in the U.S. that funds student businesses rather than gives prize money.

  • Meet "The Hatch" Investors Vying to Launch Student Businesses Apr 29, 2014 1:34 PM BGSU is the only university in the country to host a program where student entrepreneurs have the opportunity to obtain investor funding to launch their ventures. This unique and highly successful program called “The Hatch” is in its second year and is set for April 9 at 7:00pm in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union’s Lenhart Grand Ballroom. Students selected for the "The Hatch" have spent the last nine weeks working closely with alumni mentors to polish and perfect their presentations.

  • New Group of Students Join Student Ambassador Program Apr 28, 2014 4:05 PM After eight weeks of training on presentation and networking skills, thirteen students are joining the remaining group of 16 Student Ambassadors to begin their leadership role in the fall. These high achieving students recently had the opportunity to “practice” their newly acquired networking skills with BGSU alumni on March 17, and they will participate in a new orientation program March 24, conducted by the current group of Student Ambassadors.

  • Student’s Internship Turns into Full-Time Position at Kohl’s Apr 28, 2014 9:58 AM Students in the College of Business are strongly encouraged to obtain an internship prior to graduation so they can earn valuable experience that employers are looking for in graduates. Nearly three-fourths of the BGSU business students go through an internship, and in some cases, these internships turn into full-time jobs after graduation. Patrick McFall is a senior management student, graduating in August, who is one of those students whose internship employer, Kohl’s, offered him a full-time job at graduation. His job was full of managerial responsibilities, a lot more than he had expected.

  • Speed Interviews Prepare Students for Job Interviews Apr 24, 2014 4:39 PM As part of the Introduction to Marketing class (MKT 2010), students prepare a Career Marketing Plan project that ends each semester with a session of Speed Interviews. This “speed” approach allows students to give a brief “elevator pitch” to business professionals from area companies. These professionals listen to the students’ two-minute pitch and then give feedback on how well the students presented. After five minutes a bell rings, and the students move to another professional, improving their “sales pitch” each time.

  • Aspiring Student Entrepreneurs "Hatch" Their Businesses With Investor Support Apr 17, 2014 10:08 AM At BGSU, students have the unique opportunity to launch a business with the assistance of a business incubation program called "The Hatch." If selected as a finalist through an application process, students work on a business presentation with an alumni mentor for ten weeks. The aspiring entrepreneurs then face a panel of investors, along with a live audience, and pitch their ideas in hopes of obtaining funding to “hatch” their venture, similar to the television show "Shark Tank."

These four individuals have “blazed an entrepreneurial trail to success” and will be inducted into the Dallas-Hamilton Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame on April 10.   • New Recruiting Center Assists Employers with Interviewing Students Apr 16, 2014 9:16 AM Because of feedback from employers, the College of Business and the Business Career Accelerator have created a convenient and comfortable location for employers to interview our students for jobs year-round. Located on the fourth floor of the Business Administration Building, the new Career Accelerator Recruiting Center accommodates recruiters in four separate interview suites, and has an employer lounge and a reception area. The layout of the interview suites can be either a formal office setting or a more casual seating arrangement.

Carpenter, a native of Oviedo, Florida, compiled 16 goals in 15 games this season and played an important role down the stretch to help BGSU advance to the WCHA Final Five where he scored two goals and three assists in the playoffs.

The team was selected as one of the five finalists out of 30 teams from around the world to compete and is the only U.S. team.

Not only is a senior-level Applied Business Experience lab course working this fall with GE Lighting on a class project to recommend the "next big thing" in light bulbs, but marketing classes are connecting with the business community in a real-world project with a local start-up that sells a children’s cavity-fighting, bubble gum flavored toothpaste across the U.S. Students in Dr. Steve Koppitsch’s Introduction to Marketing Management (MKT 2010) classes are collaborating with Branam Oral Health Technologies, located in Oregon, OH, to develop a marketing campaign to promote a toothpaste product that helps prevent tooth decay in children.

  • Executive MBA Students Travel Abroad to See Globalization First Hand Mar 21, 2014 10:56 AM As part of the Executive MBA (EMBA) courses of Global Leadership and Global Supply Chain management, students travel to other countries to experience the culture and to learn business operations up close. This year’s global trip took students to Argentina and Chile for ten days which was packed with meetings and tours. Students met with top executives at the South American branches of two American companies - Dana Corporation and Owens-Illinois. Students also met with a senior economist at one of Argentina’s largest banks, Banco Itau, and the director of corporate investment at Banco Santander in Chile, to hear about the economic trends and the role of U.S. companies in those countries.

  • MAcc Attacks Cancer by Participating in Relay for Life Mar 21, 2014 10:47 AM Students in the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program teamed up to work on a significant project that did not relate to their academics but rather to help reach the worthy goal of "attacking" cancer and wiping it out by finding a cure. More than half of the enrolled graduate students in the MAcc program joined together and formed a large team that participated in the local American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life held at BGSU’s Perry Field House. They took turns walking a total of 12 hours around the indoor track throughout the night of November 15.

  • Finance Team Selected as Finalist in National Plan Competition Mar 19, 2014 8:16 AM Congratulations go to a BGSU student team advancing to the finals of the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC) National Plan Competition. Dana Kaufman, Liz Kevorkian, and Becca Smoody presented their comprehensive personal financial plan based on uniform sample data given by IARFC. They are one of three teams selected to compete at the national level in Las Vegas at the end of March.

Employers are looking for students with knowledge of foreign cultures and business operations in other countries.   • BGSU Team Crowned Champions of Nation’s First Service Marketing Competition Feb 18, 2014 1:45 PM The first and only service marketing competition in the country was hosted on campus February 13-15 by BGSU’s Service Marketing Institute (SMI), part of the Department of Marketing. Seven universities competed in a series of three intense service marketing rounds: Service Blueprint, Service Recovery, and Customer Complaint. First place went to BGSU’s team of Kelsey Aufdencamp, Tori Etts, Ashley Flanigan, and Michelle Terry. They were coached by Dr. Dwayne Gremler, professor of marketing.

  • Winners of Supply Chain Case Competition Announced; Institute’s Spring Meeting Feb 18, 2014 1:41 PM February 10 was a busy day for the Department of Management with a supply chain case competition followed by the Spring Dinner Meeting of the Supply Chain Management Institute (SCMI). During the afternoon, seventeen business students put their supply chain expertise to work by competing in the 3rd BGSU Supply Chain Management Case Competition. SCMI and the student Supply Chain Management Association co-sponsored the case competition. The seven teams of students presented a case they prepared to judges and a live audience. First place honors went to graduate students, Zachary Bourdon and Stephen Hagerman. Zach is pursuing a master’s of applied statistics and Stephen is a full-time MBA student.

  • Business Students Attend Job Fair; Prepare With Business Career Day Feb 17, 2014 11:45 AM More and more college students are focused on getting an internship, along with obtaining a full-time job after graduation. BGSU business students had a great opportunity to connect with recruiters at the 2014 Spring EXPO Job and Internship Fair. Approximately 500 business students attended the job fair which accounted for 56% of total student attendees. One hundred and seventy-six employers had booths set up at Perry Field House with 75% of the companies focused on filling business-oriented positions.

  • Successful Business Leaders Mentor Student Entrepreneurs Feb 14, 2014 8:37 AM Seventy-six BGSU students and 100 business ideas were submitted to the Dallas-Hamilton Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership for "The Hatch" on April 9. Twelve students were selected to present their business ideas to a group of investors. In order to prepare their business presentations, the students were matched with a dozen highly success alumni mentors to work with them for ten weeks.

  • Students Take On Innovative Project with GE Lighting; Winning Teams Earn Scholarships Feb 4, 2014 3:08 PM With the new year came new regulations from the federal government requiring manufacturers to produce higher efficiency lighting products. GE Lighting (GE) has been a leader in the lighting business since incandescent technology was developed and is working on what the future “intelligent” bulb should look like and what it can be capable of doing. As part of its planning and developing process, GE came to BGSU’s College of Business during the fall semester to work with the senior-level Applied Business Experience (BizX 4000) lab course to offer students an opportunity to gain insights on how a successful company develops concepts for the capabilities of intelligent light bulbs, as well as markets them to consumers. Since the Millennials (those born primarily in the 1980’s and 1990’s) will be the future consumers of these higher efficiency lighting products, GE was interested in finding out what young people want in “the next big thing” in light bulbs.

  • Interactive Activities Highlighted a Successful College of Business Day Jan 23, 2014 1:30 PM Approximately 100 students and their families traveled from around the state as well as New Jersey and Toronto, Canada, to attend the fifth annual College of Business Day on BGSU’s campus. Guests were greeted by Interim Director of BGSU’s Admissions Office, Cecilia Castellano. The Dean of the College of Business, Raymond Braun, provided an overview of the various opportunities in the College, encouraging students to “come prepared and be engaged” when arriving on campus for their first semester.

  • Student Teams Encouraged to Apply to Supply Chain Case Competition Jan 17, 2014 10:24 AM The BGSU Supply Chain Management Association is hosting the 3nd annual Supply Chain Management Institute (SCMI) case competition on Monday, February 10, 2014, from 3:00-5:00 pm in the College of Business, preceding the Supply Chain Management Institute dinner. By applying students can gain valuable experience, build their resume, and compete for cash prizes, including a $500 first place prize to be split among the winning team members!

  • Student Finalists Announced for "The Hatch" 2014 Jan 17, 2014 9:18 AM With the huge success of last spring’s "Hatch" program, the excitement has been building to find out which student entrepreneurs will get their turn in 2014 to pitch their business ideas to investors. Seventy-six students submitted 100 business ideas to the Dallas-Hamilton Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and that huge number was reduced to 12 ideas. The finalists will work with alumni mentors over the next ten weeks to develop their business presentations and pitch their possible ventures to investors on April 9 in front of a live audience.

  • Supply Chain Student Selected for World’s Top APICS Volunteer Award Jan 16, 2014 3:48 PM Elizabeth Albers, a senior business student specializing in supply chain management, has received the 2013 Student Voluntary Service Award presented by The Association of Operations Management (APICS). Beth’s award recognizes her superior leadership and exceptional contributions as a student chapter leader and a local APICS leader. It also honors her achievements in other professional and university associations and service to the community.

  • Launch of Business Analytics Case Competition; Students Encouraged to Apply Jan 10, 2014 11:54 AM The Center for Business Analytics is hosting its first Business Analytics Case Competition in 2014. Students are encouraged to get a team of 3 to 4 people and register their team with Dr. Arthur Yeh, chair of the Applied Statistics and Operations Research (ASOR) department by 5:00pm, January 31, 2014. The winning team will receive a $1,000 cash prize to be split among team members. The second and third place teams will receive a cash prize of $600 and $300 per team, respectively.

  • Students Selected To Be Eligible for Student Ambassador Program Jan 10, 2014 11:15 AM Thirteen business students begin their journey to become eligible for the College of Business Student Ambassador program. These students were selected from a record number of applicants.

  • Dr. Nicolaou Selected as Prestigious Fulbright Scholar Jan 3, 2014 8:33 AM Another faculty member in the College of Business has been selected for the prestigious Fulbright Scholar Program. Dr. Andreas Nicolaou, professor of accounting, will be going to Cyprus to conduct research at the University of Cyprus.

  • Economics Professor Was Keynote at State Women’s Leadership Workshop Jan 2, 2014 4:50 PM Dr. Mary Ellen Benedict was the lunch and keynote speaker for the AAUW Ohio Leadership Workshop 2013: "Empowering Young Women Through Leadership." Dr. Benedict, a BGSU Distinguished Teaching Professor, presented her speech entitled "We’ve Come a Long Way (Baby) – But Not Far Enough." She is also chair of the BGSU Department of Economics.

  • Marketing Classes "Speed" Through Interviews Jan 2, 2014 4:36 PM Everything today seems to be done at a fast pace. Even giving a two-minute “elevator pitch” is done using a “speed” approach. As part of the introduction to marketing (MKT 2010) class, students prepare a Career Marketing Plan project that ends with a session of speed interviews. Business professionals from area companies listen to students for two minutes and then give feedback on how well the students presented. After five minutes a bell rings, and the students move to another professional, improving their “sales pitch” each time.

  • Celebrating Diversity: Winter Holiday Traditions of International MBA Students Jan 2, 2014 7:00 AM Tis' the season for rekindling all of those winter holiday traditions that we hold. While we get ready to partake in our own traditions by shopping for gifts, booking travel plans, and preparing meals, it is important to recognize the holiday traditions of those from different cultures than our own. Bowling Green State University proudly celebrates its diversity within its student body and embraces the cultural differences that students bring to the table. In the MBA program, students from nine different countries are represented, and with that comes many unique and interesting cultures and holiday traditions. Here are stories from four of the international students.

  • Arts/ESHP What will I do after graduation? It’s a big question faced by every student. It’s a particularly pressing question for art students, who after completing their studies often don't have well-defined career paths available to them. Tim Smith, President of the Medici Circle, a group that has long supported School of Art students and programs, recognized the problem and decided to do something about it.

  • Class of 2019 Begins College Education The College of Business is excited to welcome another incoming freshman class. The Class of 2019 is larger than last year’s, an increase of more than ten percent.

  • Professor’s Passion for Flying Lands Air Force Technology into BGSU Business Classrooms Dr. Earl McKinney took his faculty improvement leave (FIL) to new heights...literally. Dr. McKinney, professor of Management Information Systems (MIS), spent last year as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at his alma mater - the U.S. Air Force Academy. During his FIL, he studied how the Air Force uses drones and semi-autonomous robots and how it uses Big Data to make decisions and enhance coordination efforts. He is a former aircraft commander and instructor pilot in the military.
