Schmidthorst College of Business Student Earns First Place in Fall 2022 International Capsim Competition
BGSU Schmidthorst College of Business student Reece Stammen, a student focusing on information systems, recently earned first place in the Fall 2022 Capsim Challenge. Stammen’s achievement marks the 11th semester in a row a BGSU student has earned finalist status in this international competition. BGSU has more Challenge finalists (16) than any other university worldwide. Stammen competed in the daylong finals event against students from top universities across the world.
The challenge requires students to manage a simulated technology manufacturing company. Competing students must evaluate and make decisions covering all functional areas of business. There are eight qualifying rounds with the top students selected as finalists to compete head-to-head. Capsim hosts the challenge competition every spring and fall semester. Students compete voluntarily, for no class credit, and on their own time. In total, the competition requires approximately 40 hours of preparation and analysis. Stammen earned a $2,500 scholarship from the Schmidthorst College of Business in recognition of his first-place finish.
According to Stammen, his simulation experience "showed me what it is like to make real business decisions and deal with the consequences of those decisions. The simulation built my business understanding, and my decision-making skills, by teaching me that everything factors into the final result. Every detail must be accounted for and planned for to be successful."
Reflecting further, Stammen said "The best part of my simulation experience was seeing my business strategy unfold almost exactly how I envisioned it. It's very fulfilling to execute your plans and see them come to fruition."
Many Schmidthorst College of Business students, like Stammen, find the hands-on Capsim classroom experience so enjoyable they are eager to test their business acumen on an international scale.
