Artist's Statement
Sex education in U.S. public schools lack inclusivity of LGBTQ+ people, women, and other underrepresented identities. Current sex ed curriculums are primarily taught through a lens shame and abstinence stemming from puritanical roots in early U.S. culture. Fluid, a series of informative development journals and a website, addresses this lack of inclusivity and positivity in sex education and creates a welcoming and affirming environment to help young adults unlearn the shame.
Fluid refers to sexual fluidity, human sexuality, and identity, which evolves and changes over time. Sex education too should evolve and change. The content of Fluid is modeled after the 5 circles of sexuality: reproductive health, sexual identity, sensuality, intimacy, and sexualization. Fluid focuses on sexual identity, sensuality, and intimacy. The content guides users to make decisions for themselves rather than push one value system or another onto them. Watercolor and soft, warm color palettes present a welcoming space to comfort and ease the viewer. Fluid’s workbooks are the centerpiece to help users to be introspective about their own experiences and make educated decisions.
