Let's Be Mendful - 2022 - Mixed Media: Website, Videos on Social Media, Stickers, and Screenprinted Sewing Kits - Not For Sale

Artist's Statement

We are living in a culture of constantly buying new. During the pandemic there was an increasein online shopping and glamourising those purchases on TikTok. Our purchasing habits reflect of our lifestyle changes by the pandemic due and a need for the outside world/ to be beyond the bubble. Fashion waste produced by these habits is also a rising issue. Online shopping habits challenge our clothing fit issues as we cannot try on our clothes/purchases, thus valuable sewing skills to help tailor clothing.

Let’s Be Mendful plays on the phrase “let’s be mindful.” It introduces skills to fix issues of clothing fit or thrifted items. This kit, Let’s Be Mendful, boosts confidence for the wearer by fit and prolongs the life of their favorite piece of clothing. Sewing kits include tools needed along with simple video instructions allows for the process to be straightforward and simple. Let’s Be Mendful instructions uses TikTok as the platform to communicate as most users share in this space to express their purchases. Accessible instruction and physical kits can ease first time sewers and give a jumpstart to refresh their clothing and sustainable lifestyle habits.
