Artist's Statement
Emotional Intelligence can be defined as the ability to understand, use, and manage one’s own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and diffuse conflict. When we communicate with others it is rare that we solely rely on the technicality of their words. To fully understand what someone is trying to communicate or what the next step is for us to take, we need to be able to evaluate qualities like emotions, tone, body language, and histories.
Through the practice of Emotional Intelligence, we can learn to develop and maintain healthy relationships and work to find successful solutions to our communication problems. But how can design be used to influence individuals to build their Emotional Intelligence to become better communicators?
The booklet set “Building Emotional Intelligence” is a six-part Emotional Intelligence workbook that focuses on the four main components of the practice: Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management. Each booklet will focus on a different component, prompting the user to fill in the activities as they move through their journey. The key to learning is interaction, repetition, and practice. The users will ideally be gifted the workbooks, as this is a subject that might not be otherwise sought out. With black gift bags and custom tissue paper, the packaging will act as a visual connection to the inside of the booklets, much like a cover might.
