Artist's Statement
While women are often pushed to the back in major historic events, they are the ones that orchestrate them and keep them moving towards the new future they desire while also inspiring new young activists in the process. With every action is an equal and opposite reaction, and every social movement is a catalyst for a new one, breaking obsolete bounds and shattering old norms. This project is a statement on that. Objects associated with femininity like candles, shattered glass, silverware, and the color white are aligned to create a “domino effect” where new interactions create even newer ones that eventually break and create new boundaries. This is a reflection of how historical social movements have created such an effect from one to another and how it is still occurring. Though there is only one clip that shows the full thing working throughout, the clips that “failed” still show the trials and tribulations that women endure to get to the top. But, even still, these clips show a progression through persistence and determination to eventually get to an end goal. Though this project has an end, history does not. These social movements are far from over and the job is far from done.
