Community Participants:

BGSU faculty who supervise graduate students would benefit most from participating in this community. However, all BGSU faculty, adjunct instructors and staff who work with graduate students are also welcome to participate.

Community Description:

This learning community is designed to support BGSU faculty who supervise graduate students. New and experienced faculty are all welcome to participate and share ideas, discuss their experiences, and build new skills and knowledge. Topics covered will include defining and creating a formal mentoring plan, setting expectations for the graduate student, preparing and socializing the graduate student into academic culture, and promoting professional development for the graduate student. This community will meet virtually every two to three weeks during the academic year to discuss and work on collaborative activities. Participants will benefit from networking with colleagues and developing skills to being an effective mentor to graduate students. In this community, participants will also work on a mentoring portfolio that is meant to support their mentoring journey.

Community Learning Outcomes:

By participating in this community, you will be able to:

  • Understand the foundations of mentoring as it applies to graduate students.
  • Identify barriers and challenges to graduate education for individual graduate students.
  • Identify personal biases that influence our expectations for graduate students.
  • Utilize strategies to support the professional development of your graduate students.
  • Develop a mentoring portfolio to support your mentorship journey.

Participant Expectations:*

As a member of this community, you are expected to:

  • Meet the community learning outcomes.
  • Actively participate in and attend at least 80% of the learning community's meetings.
  • Participate in meeting discussions and activities.
  • Complete pre-assigned learning activities.

*Participants in this community must meet the stated participant expectations in order to be eligible to receive funds for participation.
