Community Participants:

The New Faculty Learning Community invites all full-time faculty who are beginning their first or second year at BGSU. We welcome qualified rank faculty (QRF) and tenure-track faculty (TTF) from all BGSU colleges, schools, departments, and programs.

Community Description:

Becoming a new BGSU faculty member represents a critical career juncture with many opportunities and challenges. This learning community is designed to help you build your foundation at BGSU by supporting your success, belongingness, and career advancement through carefully designed professional development programming, ongoing support and accountability, and opportunities to expand your professional networks. You will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of valuable topics such as developing a semester plan, inclusive pedagogy, research productivity, mentoring, academic time management, preparing materials for merit and promotion, and rising above burnout. In addition to making meaningful connections with learning community members and academic leaders across BGSU’s campus, you will utilize the NCFDD’s resources to support and sustain your success.

Community Learning Outcomes:

By participating in this community, you will be able to:

  • Develop a strategic semester plan that supports your teaching, research productivity, service, work-life balance, and career advancement.
  • Apply 3 inclusive teaching practices to support BGSU students’ success.
  • Implement a daily writing practice to support your research productivity and career advancement.
  • Apply 3 effective mentoring practices to support the success of BGSU students.
  • Develop your mentor network.
  • Implement 2 NCFDD techniques to better align your time with your priorities.
  • Present key findings from 1 NCFDD special topics webinar to BGSU colleagues.

Participant Expectations:*

As a member of this community, you are expected to:

  • Meet the community learning outcomes.
  • Actively participate in and attend at least 80% of the learning community's meetings each semester
  • Complete 1 professional development assignment each month; these assignments are designed to strategically support new faculty members’ success and career advancement. Most monthly homework assignments will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete.
  • Complete the final learning community reflection in Canvas.

*Participants in this community must meet the stated participant expectations in order to be eligible to receive funds for participation.
