Study Abroad Programs

Japan

All students must have studied Japanese language a minimum of one year. Asian Studies majors will be given first consideration, but open to all majors. Students who are selected by the Asian Studies Advisory Committee must pay for airfare and room and board, and they are required to pay tuition to BGSU.

Kanda

Kanda University

KUIS is located along Tokyo Bay between Tokyo and Narita International Airport in a metropolitan area of Chiba prefecture called Makuhari. The university is set in an educational zone with other universities and educational facilities. Makuhari Messe Convention and Exhibition Center, the World Business Garden, international hotels, new apartment complexes, shopping facilities, and several parks are a part of this new community. Makuhari beach and a Japanese garden with a tea-house are also located close-by.

Gakushuin Women’s College

Gakushuin Women’s College was founded in 1998 and has a history that can be traced back to the founding of University in 1877 by Emperor Meiji. Gakushuin Women’s College (GWC) consists of the Faculty of International Studies and the Graduate School of International Cultural Relations. The Faculty of International Studies comprises three departments: the Department of Japanese Studies, the Department of Intercultural Communication and the Department of English Communication, featuring well-organized global educational programs, broad and in-depth liberal arts and interdisciplinary education, and the pursuit of traditional Japanese culture.

Hiroshima

Hiroshima Jogakuin University

Hiroshima Jogakuin University is a higher learning institution for women consisting of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the Faculty of Human Life Studies and the Graduate School. The total enrollment including international students is approximately 1870. HJU is one of the four constituents of Hiroshima Jogakuin, the other three being the Junior High School, the Senior High School, and the Kindergarten.

Kobe College

Kobe College

Kobe College was the first women’s college to gain university status in West Japan, chartered in 1948. It is known for its architectural style, including unique rooftops and marble floors in many of its buildings. Admission is offered to women only during the regular academic year, but men are permitted to study at this institution over the summer.
This program is for Asian Studies major or minors with one year of Japanese language study. Students must consult the program director in the Asian Studies department and participate in an interview the second week of February.

Nanzan-University

Nanzan University

Founded in 1946 as a college of foreign languages, Nanzan University has grown into one of the most prestigious universities in the Tokai region. The addition through the years of new faculties, departments and research centers has not changed the basic purpose and thrust of Nanzan education—to provide an education rooted in Christian values across all fields of knowledge.

Saitama University

Saitama University

This exchange program is for an academic year.  The credits earned at Saitama will be transferred to BGSU by Akiko Jones, Director of Asian Studies, in fall. Two students will be selected for each academic year after all applicants are interviewed by Asian Studies committee members.

Nagoya

Nagoya Gakuin University

Sponsored by Nagoya Gakuin University, the Bowling Green State University summer study program in Japan offers students an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the Japanese language and culture through homestays, cultural activities, and field trips.  Lasting approximately one month, students will receive 6 language and culture credits. The aim of the course is to emerge the students in the real situations where the Japanese language is spoken (1) to acquire the intermediate language skills (esp. JAPN3000) or/and to apply the basic language skills in daily living (JAPN2000), particularly listening and speaking skills and (2) to acquire integrated as well as concrete knowledge and understandings of the Japanese people and the culture.

Hunan Normal University

Hunan Normal University is located in Changsha, China, in the Hunan province. Its campuses are located near Mount Yuelu. It boasts a library housing 3.4 million volumes. It is one of China’s 211 Project universities, meaning that it is considered one of the nation’s 100 key universities receiving funding to encourage excellence in research.Specialists in the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation offer admission services, airport pickup, living ans students visa help.  

Shandong University

Shandong University

Shandong University (SDU) is one of the oldest and prestigious universities in China. Founded in 1901, SDU was the second national university established. In 2001, it was listed among the 21 national key construction first-class universities by the Ministry of Education.
Shandong University consists of 31 colleges and a graduate school. Courses are offered in 11 main academic disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, natural sciences, engineering, management, medicine, education and military. In addition, there are 7 professional master's degree programs in law, business management, engineering, clinical medicine, public health, dentistry and public administration.
 

University of Macau College of Business

University of Macau College of Business

The University of Macau (UM) was founded in 1981 as a private institution, and became a public university in 1991. Through thirty years of development, UM has become a leading university and also the only public comprehensive university in Macao.
UM has exchange programs with 100 institutions around the world and recruits international staff to create a multi-lingual learning environment for students.  In recent years UM has educated students through a multi-pronged, whole person education approach including general education, research and internships, and community education, to meet students’ varying needs.  

Korea

Sookmyung University

Sookmyung Women's University

Sookmyung Women's University (SMU) is Korea's first national private women's school. It was founded in 1906 during the latter stages of the Korean empire, one of the most difficult periods in the nations history. SMU has accumulated invaluable education experience, research capabilities and community service experience.

Daegu University

Daegu University

Daegu University, Korea's first higher educational institute for special education, was founded in 1956 and included the fields of Special Education, Rehabilitation Science, and Social Welfare. Today, Daegu University is a comprehensive university with 12 colleges (91 majors), 8 graduate schools, and an enrollment of over 20,000 students. Students can take Korean language classes and choose from a variety of English taught courses in subjects such as Business, Culture, History & Political Science.
