Scholarships & Awards


The Akiko Kawano Jones Scholarship: this scholarship is given to students to participate in the Japanese Study Abroad experience. 


The Christina Merrick Scholarship: Christina Merrick, a 1994 graduate of BGSU, a former Asian Studies major and President of Japanese Club, felt so strongly about the Japanese program at BGSU that she created this annual scholarship in 1999. This is given to students who are involved in the study of the Japanese language and with the BGSU Japanese Club.

  • Recipients must major in Asian Studies and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • The recipient must exhibit the promotion of the Japanese Program through their activities and be actively involved in the Japanese Club.

The Dr. Fujiya Kawashima Memorial Scholarship  This scholarship was established by the faculty of The Asian Studies Program in memory of Fuyiya Kawashima when he suddenly passed away in 2006. This scholarship is given to outstanding undergraduates majoring in Asian Studies with a focus on East Asia (Japan, Korea, China). The student should maintain a grade point average of 3.2 or higher and demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of bridging Asian and American culture and of promoting global peace and mutual historical understanding. 

  • Recipients must major in Asian Studies and have a GPA of 3.2 or above.
  • Preference shall be given to Asian Studies majors with history as a minor.
  • Recipients must exhibit service to the promotion of Asian Studies through their activities and/or involvement in the Japanese or Chinese Club.

The Dr. Hiroko Nakamoto Scholarship for Japanese Studies: Dr. Hiroko Nakamoto, a 1956 graduate of BGSU and donor, has given this scholarship to students who have studied hard to learn the Japanese Language and have contributed to the Japanese program. This is given to one or two students who have demonstrated excellence in the study of Japan.

  • Recipients must major in Asian Studies and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Recipients must have studied hard to learn the Japanese language and contributed to the Japanese program.

The Dr. Kiyo Kitahara Scholarship for Asian Studies Dr. Kitahara, who was an educator in Japan and principal of a school in Japan, established this scholarship for students who have committed to promote Asian Studies. This is given to an Asian Studies major who has demonstrated excellence in the study of Asia.

  • Recipients must major in Asian Studies and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • The recipients must have committed to promote Asian Studies.

The Seiko and Charles McCann Scholarship   Seiko and Charles McMann who were residents of Toledo established a scholarship for the students who have contributed to the mutual understanding through culture between the US and Japan. This is given to one or two students who have demonstrated leadership to promote mutual understanding through culture between the U.S. and Japan.

  • Recipients must major in Asian Studies and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Recipients must have contributed to mutual understanding through culture between The US and Japan
