Marshal Fettro receives Distinguished Thesis award
PhD candidate Marshal Fettro is the recipient of the 2017 BGSU Distinguished Thesis Award. His thesis, “Spousal Problems and Family-to-Work Conflict: Mediating Effects of Time, Relationship, and Financial Strain,” was chaired by Kei Nomaguchi with I-Fen Lin and Wendy Manning serving as committee members.
Marshal's thesis will be submitted to the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award competition as the nominee for Bowling Green State University in their Social Sciences category. A decision for that competition will be announced in the spring.

Christopher Dennison, PhD candidate, and Professor Raymond Swisher find upward educational mobility is associated with a lower likelihood of committing a crime, and downward mobility is linked to a greater likelihood.
Sue Nash presents at research conference, receives award
Doctoral candidate Sue Nash presented "Motherhood, Mattering and Intimate Partner Violence among Young Adults" at the International Family Violence and Child Victimization Research Conference in Portsmouth, NH, July 10-12. Nash also received the Gerald T. Hotaling Memorial Student Research Award.
Grad students learn how to teach sociology in SOC 6600
Professor Laura Sanchez's Teaching Introductory Sociology course addresses a number of practical skills, such as designing a course, drafting a syllabus, constructing assignments, grading materials, and tailoring lessons to students' needs. Additionally, the course considers multiple ways to communicate an education message, evaluate course content, and develop decision-making and leadership skills.
Caregivers study published in The Journals of Gerontology
Anna M. Hammersmith, graduate student, and I-Fen Lin's, sociology professor, research, "Evaluative and Experienced Well-being of Caregivers of Parents and Caregivers of Children," was recently published in The Journals of Gerontology.
As for positive experienced well-being, caregivers of children rated caregiving activities as happier (4.89 vs. 4.52) and more meaningful (5.25 vs. 5.06) than caregivers of parents...
Faculty and students attend Add Health Users Conference in Bethesda, MD
The Add Health conference provides researchers who are working with data from Add Health an opportunity to share research goals, experiences, and results. It also provides an opportunity for those interested in working with the data to learn how they are currently being used by others.

Barbara Prince Elected Graduate Student Member for ASA and AKD
Congratulations to Barbara Prince, BGSU sociology doctoral student. Barbara has been elected Graduate Student Member of the Council for the American Sociological Association (ASA) Section on Teaching and Learning and was selected for a two-year term as the Graduate Student Representative for Alpha Kappa Delta's Council.
Anna Hammersmith Receives Adamchak Award
Congratulations to Anna M. Hammersmith, BGSU sociology doctoral student, who is the 2016 Adamchak Award recipient. Established by Donald and Susan Adamchak (former recipients of BGSU sociology PhD and Master's degrees, respectively), this award recognizes a graduate student's research excellence in demography.

Students organize teaching workshop
BGSU sociology graduate students organized a teaching workshop, Friday, April 8, on the BG campus. Dean J. Howard, Butler University, spoke at the one-day event.
The interactive session centered around how to get students engaged in classroom discussion. Howard encouraged graduate students and faculty to brainstorm and share their ideas, while he provided feedback. Additionally, the workshop focused on how to break the classroom norms of civil attention and consolidation of responsibility.
The workshop was organized by members of the Professional Development Committee who are listed below.

Sixteen BGSU graduate students presented research posters and papers at the Population of America (PAA) 2016 annual meeting in Washington, DC, March 31 - April 10. Three of the posters received top honors.

Pew Research Center Fact Tank
Graduate students volunteer during MLK Day of Service
Sociology undergrads, graduate students, and faculty joined with students and faculty from the School of Cultural and Critical Studies in an MLK Day of Service activity on Monday. The group gathered at Home Depot to paint bookcases for La Conexion de Wood County, which will donate the furniture along with children’s books to 10 Latino families. This activity is part of La Conexion’s Our Children The Future program, which is supported by the BG Community Foundation and the Bill Rowles Fund. Books were donated by the Wood County District Public Library, Grounds for Thought, and Read for Literacy.
Brown, Lin, & Hammersmith research shows gray divorced women more likely to be poor
New research by Drs. Susan Brown & I-Fen Lin & PhD student Anna Hammersmith finds 27% of gray divorced women are classified as poor.
