Setting a Course for Student Success

Join the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) for the Spring 2025 Setting a Course for Student Success Seminar, on Thursday, May 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Olscamp Hall. Sponsored by the Division of Student Engagement and Success, this intensive, interactive, in-person session will provide you with practical strategies for engaging students, establishing meaningful expectations, and delivering early, actionable feedback to support student success and belonging from the start of the semester. 

Led by the CFE team members and faculty facilitators, we will discuss inclusive evidence-based teaching strategies, syllabus best practices, formative assessments, and lesson planning to facilitate a sense of belonging and engagement among our students. Upon completion of the session, you will have an intentional, student-centered plan for the first two weeks of class. Please bring a laptop and any course materials you have for your Summer and/or Fall 2025 course(s). Lunch will be provided. Attendees who successfully complete the program will receive the Setting a Course for Student Success Seminar Spring 2025 email signature stamp

Advance registration is required. You must be able to participate in the entirety of the full-day session to register for and participate in this event. Registration is open to full-time qualified rank faculty (QRF), tenure-track faculty (TTF), and adjunct instructors teaching a Fall 2025 course. Space is limited. Registration is first-come, first served.  

On the registration form you will need to:

  • Provide your personal information (e.g., BGSU role, college).
  • Identify the specific Summer or Fall 2025 class that you will focus on during the seminar.
  • Identify 2-3 specific learning goals you hope to achieve during the seminar.
  • Identify 1 specific seminar deliverable (e.g., course syllabus draft, assignment redesign, lesson plans for the first week of classes, etc.) you plan to accomplish during the seminar.

Setting a Course for Student Success Seminar Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:

  • Explore inclusive, evidence-based teaching strategies that motivate students and foster a sense of belonging.  
  • Analyze your course syllabus for clarity, tone, and transparent expectations.  
  • Develop an instructional outline for the first two weeks of your class incorporating evidence-based teaching strategies and formative assessments.  
  • Develop a detailed lesson plan for at least one class session outlining evidence-based teaching strategies and formative assessments.

Registration is open to full-time qualified rank faculty (QRF), tenure-track faculty (TTF), and adjunct instructors teaching a Fall 2025 course.

No, registration for this program is not open to graduate students and/or graduate student instructors. The CFE does offer support for graduate student instructors in the form of the Graduate Student Instructor Learning Community. If you are interested in participating in this community next academic year, please reach out to the CFE.  

You must be able to participate in the entirety of the full-day seminar from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in order to register for and participate in this event. Please do not register if you are not able to commit to the entirety of the event.

Yes! Lunch will be provided. Please indicate your boxed lunch preference and dietary restrictions on the registration form. If you need to bring your own lunch due to dietary restrictions or allergies, please feel free to do so. Access to a fridge will be provided.

To promote community-building and limit external distractions, the seminar has been designed as an in-person event. All participants must be able to attend the event in Olscamp Hall on BGSU’s Main Campus.
