Kei Nomaguchi is a professor of sociology at Bowling Green State University. She earned her PhD in Sociology from the University of Maryland in 2003. Prior to joining the faculty at BGSU in 2009, she was on the faculty of Northern Illinois University.
Her research focuses on parenthood in the United States. She is interested in how children affect adults’ lives over the course of life, particularly during the transition to parenthood, children’s early years, elementary school years, teenage years, and young adult years, and how the patterns change as society changes. She has an extensive record of research examining how parental time investment in childrearing, work-family conflict, and the stress, health, and well-being of parents differ across subpopulations by gender, socioeconomic status, marital or other romantic partnership status, race/ethnicity, and nativity. Her methodological expertise lies in conducting secondary analyses of national surveys collected and publicly available from various government agencies and researchers.
She has served as deputy editor of the Journal of Marriage and Family and Society and Mental Health, and as a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Sociology Compass, and Social Currents. She was on the council (2017-2020) and a chair-elect, chair, and past-chair (2021-2024) of the Family Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA).
She has held departmental administrative positions, including serving as Director of Graduate Studies (2020-2024) and Chair (2025-present).
