AKD inducted nine students

Seven undergraduate students and two graduate students were inducted into the 2020 Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) International Sociology Honor Society. The purpose of AKD is to acknowledge excellence in teaching, research, and study of sociology.

Seven students honored for exceptional academic achievements
 

AIDA TOMEH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Mia Berg works with America Reads, is active in the Honors College, volunteers with BGSU votes. Mia knows sociology is a good foundation and she is still discovering her career path. Her overall GPA is 3.8.

PENNY AND HOWARD ALDRICH SOCIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
Meghan Dobbins has studied abroad in Brazil; she is member of the Chapman community; and works with First Step. She is a S.M.A.R.T. volunteer mentoring women of color at BGSU. Her goal is non-profit work for social justice, climate change, and to end violence against women. She is also a recipient of a Student Life award and the John Damonti award. She has a GPA of 3.70.

JERALD ROSENBLUM SCHOLARSHIP (3 recipients)
Jalena Cozart has been very active with other sociology majors and participating in Department events. She was one of the main organizers for sociology at STEM in the Park, teaching children about to interpret data and show how it is used to make decisions. Her goal is to work to end human trafficking.

Gabrielle Sanders works with America Reads and is a participant in Falcon Forensics. This summer she will be doing an internship through The Washington Center. She is a pre-law student and member social justice learning community. Her goal is to become a civil rights attorney.

Kyra Williams-Davis does community work in Detroit. She is a member of the Detroit youth leadership group and the BGSU Leadership and Success group. Her goal is to work on public policy to support disadvantaged communities.

Kyle Thompson receives CURS award

BGSU undergraduate student Kyle Thomspson recently received the CURS (Center for Undergraduate Research & Scholarship) Symposium on Diversity award for his research "Nonprofit Methodology of Advocacy for Black People in Columbus, Ohio." Kyle was awarded an original glasswork designed by a BGSU faculty member and glass blowing artist.

The CURS symposium offers undergraduate students the opportunity to disseminate findings on critical issues within their respective fields. Posters, and other types of displays, based on projects conducted by students in undergraduate courses on any topic related to diversity in addition to submissions based on research, scholarly, or creative work conducted by individual students with a faculty mentor are accepted.
