Freshman Seminar 1910, "Animals in Human Lives"
Margaret Weinberger, lecturer and director of undergraduate studies, encourages professors to develop BGSU 1910 seminars on topics they are passionate about, and Weinberger is passionate about animals. "Dogs are “a social lubricant,” Weinberger said. “They facilitate social interaction.”
Julia Arroyo ('12) receives prestigious sociology minority fellowship from ASA
Sociology graduate Julia Arroyo was recently appointed Fellow in the American Sociological Association (ASA) Minority Fellowship Program Cohort 43. Arroyo is a doctoral candidate at the University of Florida (UF). Her research interests include race and ethnicity, child welfare systems, and families, children, and youth. Her work promotes positive outcomes among racial-ethnic minority youth and youth in zero-parent households (e.g., with grandparents or foster parents) and creates space for their experiences in theories of their well-being.

2016 ICPSR Summer Intern Spotlight on Nico Pinchak
Nico Pinchak ('17) will spend 10 weeks with the ICPSR Summer Internship Program. ICPSR celebrates the 12th year of this highly competitive program with major funding coming from ICPSR’s Instructional Resources and participating archives.
During his time in Ann Arbor, from June 6 to August 12, Pinchak will:
- Gain experience with processing data and learn popular statistical software packages, including SAS, SPSS, STATA, and R.
- Attend graduate-level courses in the ICPSR Summer Program.
- Participate in the Lunch and Lecture professional development series.
- Complete a research project resulting in conference-ready posters.
Undergraduates honored for diversity research
Four awards were presented for excellence at a ceremony on March 2 as part of the inaugural Undergraduate Symposium on Diversity: Opportunities and Challenges for the Inclusion of Diversity in Higher Education and Society.
Honoree Shira Smith's (3rd from left) group research project, “I Called My Mom and Told Her How Much I Hated College: Race Differences in BGSU Students’ Experiences of Diversity and Culture Shock,” was part of a sociology class taught by Dr. Laura Sanchez on introductory methodology. Additional team members include Emily Jayjohn, Kelly Soinski, Sierra Young, Jen Backus, Thomas Miller, Christina Rodriguez, Jordan McCormick, Aaron Williamson, & Bradley Holmes.
Sanchez noted that CURS offers undergraduates important opportunities to not only conduct research but to also gain experience presenting it.
Undergraduates to present research at Northeast Ohio (NEO) Undergraduate Sociology Symposium
Two undergraduate majors will present their research projects from last semester's SOC 4800 Capstone course at the upcoming NEO Undergraduate Sociology Symposium at Kent State University on Saturday, March 12.
Samantha Nousak will present her research paper titled, "Cohorts and Perceived Social Stigma of Mental Illness by Education," and Nico Pinchak will present his research poster on "The Relationship Between Teacher Reward and Expectations for College Attendance: Social Class and Racial-Ethnic Differences."
Undergraduate student Mallory Farabaugh presents research poster at sociology research conference
Mallory Farabaugh presented her research poster at the Minds at Work: Student Research Conference, 2/23, on the campus of Heidelberg University. Farabaugh collaborated with her advisor Dr. Monica Longmore on their research poster titled:
"Racial/Ethnic Diversity, Condom Use, Sexual Concurrency,
and HIV Testing Among College Students"
SOC 2680 Introductory Methodology students participate in inaugural symposium
The inaugural Undergraduate Symposium on Diversity (USD) was held January 13 in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. The following undergraduate students created a research poster for the event with the assistance of their mentor Professor Laura Sanchez:

Undergraduate students volunteer during MLK Day of Service
Sociology undergrads, graduate students, and faculty joined with students and faculty from the School of Cultural and Critical Studies in an MLK Day of Service activity on Monday. The group gathered at Home Depot to paint bookcases for La Conexion de Wood County, which will donate the furniture along with children’s books to 10 Latino families. This activity is part of La Conexion’s Our Children The Future program, which is supported by the BG Community Foundation and the Bill Rowles Fund. Books were donated by the Wood County District Public Library, Grounds for Thought, and Read for Literacy.
Nomaguchi's 4800 Sociology Capstone students present research
Undergraduate students in Dr. Kei Nomaguchi's 4800 Sociology Capstone course presented their research findings using GSS or Add Health. The two-day panel of research, presented to faculty and graduate students, included a variety of sociological topics such as mental health, religion, parental issues, and physical force in policing.

Farabaugh awarded CURS grant
Congratulations to Sociology student Mallory Farabaugh! Her research proposal with Professor Monica Longmore, "Racial/ethnic diversity, condom use, sexual concurrency, and HIV testing among college students" was awarded a BGSU Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship grant.
Warner recognized for outstanding research poster
Diau'Monique Warner, sociology/psychology double major and capstone student, receives CURS Glass Award from BGSU President Mazey. Warner presented her research poster on racial disparities in school attachment at the Inaugural NW Ohio Undergraduate Symposium for Research and Scholarship in April. Congratulations, Diau'Monique!

Woods accepted as volunteer teacher for International Student Volunteer Program
Sabreena Woods, senior sociology major and NCFMR Undergraduate Research Assistant, will volunteer this summer in the Dominican Republic. As a volunteer teacher, Woods will help educate children who have little access to everyday resources like books and pencils. She will teach English, math, geography, sciences, and health education to children in a summer camp-like setting.

Congratulations to our undergraduate students receiving honors in Sociology this semester
Autumn Kunkel (middle) and Nico Pinchak (left) are the winners of the Dr. Aida Tomeh Memorial Scholarship award for outstanding sociology majors; Autumn is a graduating senior and Nico a continuing student in sociology. Autumn was part of the first capstone experience; her research examined the relationship between educational attainment and attitudes towards same-sex sexual contact. She is an Editor for the BG News. Nico is a new major, coming to us from the College of Education where he served as an undergraduate teaching assistant. He conducted research during a month-long visit to China and presented that research at the (Northeast Ohio Undergraduate Sociology Symposium (NEOUSS) at Kent State last month. Both are wonderful representatives for our undergraduate program.
We are inducting five new members into Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the International Sociology Honor Society. Congratulations to Veronica Cooper, Nadia Oehler, Nico Pinchak (right), Brittany Plocek, and Nicole Ridenour on earning this honor. It is exciting that all are continuing students and so we will be able to hold chapter activities in the fall. Pinchak (l), Kunkel (m), and Oehler (r) are pictured.
Georgoff recognized for "public involvement and...motivation to create lasting change"
Madison (Maddi) Georgoff, senior sociology major, has been honored as the winner of a 2015 Campus Compact Newman Civic Award. The award honors those who inspire other students in addition to the entire campus and community.
My experiences involving civic engagement and social justice in college have grounded me in the perspective that there is good to be done in the world, and it doesn't have to be done alone. -- Maddi Georgoff
Flynn and Knoop Present Research Posters at Undergraduate Research Symposium
Ryan Flynn and Courtney Knoop, working closely with Professors Ray Swisher, Danielle Kuhl, and Jorge Chavez on the NIH grant, Neighborhood Change and Violence in Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood, presented research posters during the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. The grant, with respect to public health, focuses on changes in youth violence. The students use Add Health Data to support their research questions.

Knoop, Trauth-Jurman, and Kunkel Inducted into the Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) International Sociology Honor Society
Congratulations to Courtney Knoop, Danielle Trauth-Jurman, and Autumn Kunkel on earning this honor. Danielle and Courtney are graduating seniors, while Autumn returns next year, and we hope to involve her in further developing our local chapter.
Knoop and Santana Receive 2013-2014 Outstanding Sociology Major Award
Courtney Knoop and Julio Santana are winners of the Dr. Aida Tomeh Memorial Scholarship. Courtney has been assisting Associate Professors Ray Swisher and Jorge Chavez and Assistant Professor Danielle Kuhl with NIH supported research this year, and has also been working as an intern with Maritz Research. Julio has been an active volunteer in the BG community, and in his role as an RA, he has been involved in campus service, creating and conducting workshops on race, and diversity more generally. Both are wonderful representatives for our undergraduate program.
Trauth-Jurman and Knoop Participate in Undergraduate Research Symposium
Representing the sociology department at this year's university-wide research symposium are Danielle Trauth-Jurman and Courtney Knoop. Both present their senior honors thesis; Danielle presents The Story of Delray: A Case Study on Environmental and Restorative Justice in Detroit, while Courtney presents Neighborhood Disorganization and Weight: Structural Factors Affecting Adolescent Obesity.
Williams and Tuvell Receive 2012-2013 Undergraduate Sociology Awards
Seth Williams received the Dr. Aida Tomeh Memorial Scholarship for outstanding graduating senior. He was presented this award at the College of Arts And Sciences' annual awards ceremony with Dr. Susan Brown as his favorite professor and his parents in attendance. Williams also earned a Friends of the Library research award for a paper he wrote under Dr. Brown's supervision. Additionally, Caleb Tuvell was recognized as this year's Outstanding Sociology Major.
Moorman, Tuvell, Volpe, & Williams Initiated into Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD)
Chelsie Moorman, Caleb Tuvell, Chelsie Volpe, and Lindsay Williams were initiated into the AKD sociology honor society in the spring of 2012.
Blaine, Thompson, Adams, & Moorman Receive 2011-2012 Sociology Awards
Nicholas Blaine and Theresa Thompson received the Dr. Aida Tomeh Award for outstanding graduate senior; Sara C. Adams received the Dr. Joseph Kivlin Memorial Scholarship for outstanding rising junior; and Chelsie A. Moorman received the Theresa Delorto Memorial Scholarship for outstanding rising senior.
