Lucky 13 graduate students presented at the 11th Annual OSU/BGSU Student Conference on Population held Friday, October 27th at OSU's Institute for Population Research (IPR). Thanks to all participants and those who attended the conference and supported our students. The Center for Family and Demographic Research at BGSU is looking forward to hosting #12 next year.

Susan L. Brown and Matthew Wright address the dramatic increase in the number of older cohabiters in a recent Chicago Tribune article.
The relatively little data that exist on who assumes responsibility for frail elders outside marriage is unsettling, said Brown and a former student, Matthew Wright, whose doctoral dissertation looked at adult children and their cohabiting parents.

BG alumni ('12) examine prison overcrowding and incarceration
Nicole Shoenberger, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Penn State Behrend, and Julia Mack, Director of the Criminal Justice Program & Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Gannon University, were recently asked to examine Erie County incarceration and probation/parole in relation to Day Reporting Centers. Specifically, could the use of Day Reporting Centers in Erie County alleviate some of the overcrowding in the prison, reduce recidivism, etc? Shoenberger and Mack, along with two additional academics, presented on the topic to the county board in Erie County PA.
Nine graduate students earn degrees during 289th commencement ceremony

Matthew Wright Receives Adamchak Award
Congratulations to PhD candidate Matthew Wright who is the 2017 Adamchak Award recipient. Established by Donald and Susan Adamchak (former recipients of BGSU sociology PhD and Master's degrees, respectively), this award recognizes a graduate student's research excellence in demography.

Wright's research finds cohabiters had less frequent contact with their children, and less positive relationships, than continuously married or widowed parents.
