Artist's Statement
These current pieces ask questions about in-between-ness and processes of othering. How do those who are “othered” by those in power question that power or push back? “She Was Navigating a Different Kind of Spectacle (Icarus)” wonders about the power of the other to re-invent an in-between-ness. “It Only Takes a Spark”, began as a response to the Women’s March on Washington, DC. “I Don’t Know What to Say” is my way of dealing with my anger and grief over children detained at the US/Mexico border. I am one witness to this othering, but it isn’t my story to tell.
About the Artist
M.M. Dupay completed an M.F.A. in 2D Studies from Bowling Green State University in 2005 and a combined B.A. in Studio Art and Art History from Marietta College in 1988. Focusing primarily on collage and found materials, her artwork explores issues of in-between-ness and processes of othering. How do we make sense of the shifting boundaries and intersections between hybridized identities and othered bodies? How do our relationships to past and present contexts and places shift how we are defined? How do images and stories allow us to transgress and re-create ourselves in response to the power of others? From where does the image derive its power to define and redefine? Dupay continues to ask questions in her making as well as with her students. She currently teaches first-year studios, 2-D studies, and interdisciplinary arts experiences.
She has received an Ohio Individual Artist Fellowship Award.
