BGSU READING Endorsement certificate

The BGSU Reading Endorsement Certificate Program leads to the Ohio Reading Endorsement on a valid teaching license. In addition to the five course sequence, endorsement seekers must successfully complete the state-prescribed licensure exam. The program provides applicants the opportunity to earn the Reading Endorsement while simultaneously completing the BGSU Certificate Program. When added to an existing teaching license, program completers are prepared to teach reading across the grades, K-12. The Reading Endorsement Certificate Program admission criteria include both state licensure requirements and BGSU graduate program guidelines. All five courses are offered year-round, so you can start as soon as you are admitted, in August, October, January, March, or May.

Master of Education in READING

The Master of Education in Reading Program consists of just 7 more courses beyond the endorsement. This program provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed for employment as a reading specialist and/or literacy coach.  The specific goal of the program is to prepare teachers to provide specialized reading and writing instruction, to assess and diagnose literacy behavior, and to serve as resource persons in K-12 settings.

Career Paths

Program graduates have contributed to the literacy development of children, adolescents, and adults nationally and internationally, as well as throughout the State of Ohio. School districts have actively recruited graduates as elementary, secondary, remedial reading, and two-year and four-year college developmental reading teachers. Alumni have been recruited for leadership positions in schools and districts, as well as for positions as sales representatives and editors for various publications.

Accreditation

Bowling Green State University's Graduate Programs in Reading have enjoyed a long tradition of excellence since their inception. The programs have been reviewed by outside agencies such as NCATE/CAEP, the International Literacy Association, and the Ohio Department of Higher Education as part of the teacher education accreditation process. Internally, the faculty and students annually review the programs and modify as needed.
