If you have a passion for helping children and families, consider a minor in child life at BGSU.
The minor in child life is open to BGSU students of any major. Do you plan to work in a field that involves children and their families? Gaining a deeper understanding of child development and child life theory can better prepare you and help you stand out to future employers.
The child life minor also offers a pathway toward achieving certification as a child life specialist. This rewarding and in-demand career focuses on helping children and families navigate the challenges of illness, injury, trauma, loss and other life-altering experiences.

Curriculum
The BGSU child life minor has a family-centered approach and uses trauma-informed principles that are central to what child life specialists do. Courses provide a broad understanding of child development and address how to help the entire family.
The minor consists of 21-23 credit hours, including a relevant practicum experience. The earlier you declare a minor in child life, the easier it will be to finish the necessary coursework.
You will graduate with the skills and knowledge to:
- Represent and communicate child life practice and psychosocial issues of infants, children, youth and families
- Utilize theories of child and adolescent development, stress and coping, and family systems in healthcare and community settings
- Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in diverse settings
- Apply therapeutic play activities to aid effective child coping while utilizing a family-centered approach
- Utilize coping strategies to decrease stress of hospitalization, illness, and loss and bereavement
Child life specialist certification
BGSU offers the coursework required to help you earn certification from the Association of Child Life Professionals as a child life specialist.
Certification isn’t required to have a successful career. But to practice as a child life specialist in a pediatric hospital, certification through the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) is required.
To earn certification, you must do more than complete the coursework in the child life minor. You also will be required to have a minimum of 600 hours of a child life clinical internship under the supervision of a certified child life specialist before you take the certification exam. BGSU human development and family science majors who minor in child life complete all of the academic requirements for certification as part of their coursework. We work closely with students from other majors who want certification to help them meet requirements.

The child life minor is offered through the School of Applied Human Development in the College of Education and Human Development.
Accreditation
Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2022-2023, with our next reaffirmation of accreditation scheduled for 2032-2033.
