NAME OF PROJECT: Adolescent Academic Context Study (AACS)

MAIN PURPOSE OF PROJECT: Part one of the AACS study is a four-year longitudinal mixed-methods study (2009 – 2013) investigating the relationships between school climate and sociocultural contexts of schooling with youth self-appraisals (e.g., self-esteem, self-efficacy, ethnic identity, stereotype threat) from youth in 7th through 12th grades. Part two of project includes the addition of National Student Clearinghouse Data (NSC) for these same individuals, tracking their participation in higher education from 2012 to 2020. This extends the longitudinal educational analysis from 2009 to 2020. Data collection has included quantitative data (8 waves from 2009 – 2012; per academic term data 2012-2020); in-depth interviews for qualitative analysis; and a 2015 multimethod survey. Graduate students are welcome to participate.

NAME OF PROJECT: Sacred Mobilizations: Sanctuary Churches and Sanctuary Schools
FACULY INVOLVED IN PROJECT: Dr. Bruce Collet, Professor, School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy, College of Education and Human Development, Bowling Green State University; Dr. Luis Fernando Macías, Assistant Professor, Department of Chicano and Latin American Studies, California State University, Fresno.
MAIN PURPOSE OF PROJECT (Project Description): Since the November 2016 election, hundreds of United States public school districts have declared themselves as “sanctuary” campuses, providing certain legal protections and a welcoming environment primarily, although not exclusively, for undocumented students. This sanctuary provision addresses a critical need in an era of profoundly anti-immigrant rhetoric as well as legislation. In addition to taking measures to fortify the U.S southern border, imprison asylum seekers, separate children from their families, and cut the number of refugees allowed into the country to its lowest level since the modern refugee program was established in 1980, the past presidential administration also ramped up deportation measures, including an increase in arrests of individuals in an enforcement operation who were not themselves the original target. Sacred Mobilizations: Sanctuary Churches and Sanctuary Schools represents the second phase of our research on sanctuary churches and sanctuary public schools in the United States. We are presently traveling across the country to conduct interviews with sanctuary Christian church leaders as well as education leaders within sanctuary public school districts. Our goal is to understand how “sanctuary” is being taken up as an act of resistance within this particular historical period and socio-political context.

Dr. Collet is a BGSU professor in the School of Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Policy and a Fall 2021 ICS Faculty Fellow; Dr. Macías is an assistant professor in the Chicano and Latin American Studies Department at California State University, Fresno, and an alum of BGSU’s MA in Cross Cultural and International Education program.

“Sacred Mobilizations” Dr. Bruce Collet, Professor in the School of Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Policy in the College of Education and Human Development at Bowling Green State University, and his research partner, Dr. Luis Fernando Macías, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chicano and Latin American Studies at California State University, Fresno, discussed the differences and commonalities of nearly two dozen sanctuary churches and schools across the country. This virtual discussion examined how churches and school sanctuaries function to resist anti-immigrant sentiment in the contemporary moment.
