MACIE Fulbrighters

MACIE faculty and students are fortunate to have been awarded several Fulbright grants for international education. 

Faculty Fulbright Award:

In 2010, MACIE faculty Dr. Bruce Collet, and Dr. Patricia Kubow (now at Indiana University-Bloomington) won a Fulbright-Hays Award to Jordan, where twelve teachers from our region as well as BGSU students, including several from MACIE, travelled to learn more about Arab history and culture, and to integrate that learning into school curricula and programs.

MACIE students welcomed into our program through Fulbright scholarships: 

Fatikha Khasanova from Russia, joined MACIE in Fall 2018 during her time in our program she focused on refugee and immigrant education, building on her background managing educational projects and advocating for human rights. 

Mariia Palyga from Russia, joined MACIE in Fall 2016 and further developed her interests in linguistics and philosophy in our program.

MACIE students' Fulbright awards for research and teaching upon graduation:

Samantha Martin from Michigan, joined MACIE in 2012 and was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Research Grant to study in Indonesia in 2014. Returning to that country after her two year Peace Corps service from 2010-2012, Martin spent her 10-month grant examining the process to become a traditional healer in the modern world. Following her previous international experience, as well as her cross-cultural teaching experience in the Navajo Nation as an undergraduate, Martin was an excellent candidate for the Fulbright position, as well as a strong representative of the type of student that the MACIE program at BGSU produces following her studies. Samantha Boss from Ohio, joined MACIE in 2014 and embarked on her new journey as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship recipient just weeks after graduation in 2015. Following her Peace Corps service from 2011-2014 in Guatemala, Boss returned to the region to teach English with the help of her TESOL concentration in the MACIE program. Being trilingual herself (in English, Spanish, and indigenous K'iche'), Boss has become interested in book publishing. Jessica Batterton from Virginia, joined MACIE in 2013 and in 2015 earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Rwanda. A Returned Peace Corps Volunteer from Mozambique (2009-2011), Batterton focused on Educational Development & Marginalized Populations in her MACIE studies. In Rwanda, her plans were to host a bilingual theater club in addition to teaching English, in order to bridge different generations and build confidence in English speaking amongst her students. Some MACIE students come to the program after participating in the Foreign Student Fulbright Program: 

Yami Kani Falinya from Malawi, joined MACIE in 2021. He participated in the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) at the Universtiy of Montana, in 2018. There he engaged in professional development courses and also had a chance to observe lessons and share their knowledge with teachers and students at the host university and at nearby High Schools. His research interests are related to refugee issues in education, leadership and global citizenship. 

Edith Kachia from Kenya, joined MACIE in 2019 after serving as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FTLA) Swahili instructor at University of Virginia. In MACIE she continued to widen her knowledge in diverse cultural backgrounds. Her research interests are mostly related to international students in Higher Education.

Yetunde S. Alabede from Nigeria, joined MACIE in 2019 after serving as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FTLA) Yoruba instructor at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. Her research interests include TESL, comparative pedagogy and the education of women in a bid to attenuate gender inequality.

Lyndah Wasike from Kenya, joined MACIE in Fall 2018. She served as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FTLA) Swahili instructor at Brown University. During her time in our program, she focused on researching African cultures and languages, wrote her thesis about Women’s Education in Western Kenya and also earned a TESOL graduate certificate. 

Abdelali En Nasry from Morocco, joined MACIE in Fall 2017. He served as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FTLA) Arabic instructor at Central State University. During his time in our program, he expanded on his love of languages and culture. 

Some MACIE students come to the program after  participating in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program: 

Magdalena Schroeder from Minnesota, joined MACIE in 2020 after spending two years teaching English in Tyrol with the Fulbright-Austria U.S. Teaching Assistantship (USTA). At MACIE she was able to combine her passions for foreign language education and cultural immersion to help students gain confidence in their language skills on their way to becoming global citizens.

Taylor Lenze from Michigan, joined MACIE in 2019 after serving as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) in Germany and Fulbright-Austria U.S. Teaching Assistantship (USTA) position and spent two years in Vienna, Austria, teaching English and studying Polish and German. In MACIE she pursued her passion for language and international education by earning a double MA of both German and MACIE.
