ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Admission Process
Admittance to the MAT program is selective; two paths of admittance are available:
PATH #1: Students in their last semester of undergraduate coursework or who have already earned a bachelor’s degree
- apply directly through the ATCAS APPLICATION PORTAL HERE. Applicants must meet the criteria listed below.
PATH #2: BGSU undergraduate students
- apply through the BGSU Graduate College’s Accelerated Plan by applying for early admission as an Accelerated (pre-master) student. This requires a minimum 3.0 GPA after 90 undergraduate credits or 3.2 GPA after 75 credits. In this option, you may forego the GRE submission.
- enroll in nine graduate credit hours which are used toward the curriculum requirements of the graduate program when earning a B or better in the courses.
- When these requirements, and the requirements below, are successfully completed, and the students complete a bachelor’s degree they automatically advance to the graduate program as a master’s degree student.
Both paths
Students need to:
- complete the prerequisite courses with a C or better
- submit the documents below;
- a formal interview;
- an admittance essay (describing your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an athletic trainer within the allied healthcare setting and within the directions and trends of the profession);
- completion of AT technical standards;
- two letters of recommendation; and
- evidence of 40 hours of observation under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer
Before starting the MAT program, students are expected to have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher, and to provide documentation of a current ADA technical standards (Appendix H), up-to-date immunizations (HBV, MMR, TDAP, Meningitis and Varicella), TB testing, BCI background check, and current emergency cardiac care certification.
Once students are accepted into the MAT, they are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and to complete all graduate course work with a B or better.

Required Prerequisite Coursework
• Anatomy (4 credits with lab. When anatomy and physiology are taken as a combined course, two semesters are necessary to meet this requirement)
• Physiology (4 credits with lab. When anatomy and physiology are taken as a combined course, two semesters are necessary to meet this requirement)
• General Chemistry (3-4 credits with lab)
• General Biology (3-4 credits with lab)
• College Physics (3-4 credits with lab)
• Psychology (3 credits)
• Nutrition (3 credits)
• Exercise Physiology (3 credits)
• Biomechanics or equivalent
Recommended Prerequisite Coursework
This coursework will be built upon during the MAT program and as such, student successfully completing this coursework will be well suited to begin the educational components of the MAT program.
• Statistics (3 credits)
• Medical Terminology (1-3 credits)
• Public Health (3 credits)
• Epidemiology (3 credits)
NOTE: Students may have prerequisite courses still in progress at the time they apply. All prerequisites must be completed by the start of the program. All prerequisite coursework must be taken for a letter grade* and be counted toward academic GPA (i.e. students may not take prerequisite coursework pass/fail)
*Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, BGSU MAT program will evaluation S/U grading on and individual basis.
