Dr. Andrew Hershberger at Yale University for the 2022 Summer Teachers Institute in Technical Art History (STITAH)
Over the summer, from July 10 to 16, Dr. Andrew Hershberger, BGSU’s Professor of Contemporary Art History, was fortunate to be among a group of twelve selected professors, arriving from all over the USA, to convene at Yale University for the 2022 Summer Teachers Institute in Technical Art History (STITAH): https://stitah.yale.edu/ . Here’s a brief description of STITAH from Yale’s website: “The Summer Teachers Institute in Technical Art History (STITAH) is an intensive week-long professional development program for college and university instructors in the history of art, studio art, and the sciences from colleges and universities in North America. The program is co-organized by the Yale Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, Yale University Art Gallery, and Yale Center for British Art and generously funded by the Kress Foundation.” It was Dr. Hershberger’s first visit to Yale, and he learned a lot at STITAH that will help him with his various courses at BGSU.
The attached photograph, taken by Yale’s photographer Jessica Smolinski, shows Dr. Hershberger presenting to the STITAH group inside the Yale Center for British Art on the concluding day of the Institute. Dr. Hershberger is co-presenting his small group’s findings after their technical examination—with x-radiographs, infrared reflectographs, and ultraviolet light images—of the painting next to him, a painting created by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), entitled Mrs. Robinson, and dated c. 1784. The trip to Yale was especially helpful for Dr. Hershberger’s teaching at BGSU, since both the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art were designed by the famous architect Lou Kahn (1901-1974), and both of Kahn’s Yale buildings make an appearance in Dr. Hershberger’s ARTH 3630 “Modern Architecture” survey course. Thus, at Yale Dr. Hershberger learned much more about those two Kahn buildings too, and he photographed them both for his upcoming architecture courses.
