Dr. Stafford's teaching and research interests are in interpersonal communication. More specifically she has focused on relational maintenance and long-distance relationships. She is a past chair of the Interpersonal Divisions of both the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association. She is also a past editor of the Journal of Applied Communication Research and an associate editor of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. Dr. Stafford served as the director for the School of Media and Communication from 2013 to 2022.
