2025 Shanklin Colloquium

Charles E. Shanklin Colloquium

The Charles E. Shanklin Award for Research Excellence was established by the Graduate Student Senate as a meritorious award to recognize excellence in original research by graduate students at Bowling Green State University. Mr. Charles E. Shanklin, a Bowling Green State University alumnus, generously contributed funds to Graduate Student Senate to further graduate research; thus, a special account for the Shanklin Award was established.

This year, Graduate Student Senate will sponsor a Graduate Colloquium named in memory of Charles E. Shanklin on Monday, March 31, 2025. The colloquium is a graduate student research conference. The Charles E. Shanklin Colloquium will highlight the significant research and efforts of graduate students here at BGSU. The colloquium will take place in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. More details about online itinerary will follow later. Please contact GSS with any questions at gss@bgsu.edu

Judging Process and Awards:

A subcommittee of BGSU faculty will select the two graduate student prizewinners in each category (performative arts and visual arts).  Winners will be notified after the selection process is complete.

Guidelines for Submissions:

The research or creative project must:

  • Indicate which category, performative or visual arts
  • Be composed by a BGSU graduate student and be solely the work of the author(s).
  • Include a “Statement of Work” that contains citations. The suggested length is 1 – 3 pages and conforms to research documentation guidelines such as MLA, Chicago, or APA.
  • Submissions will also include a short (1-2 minute) summary video of the work for public display online at our “Virtual Symposium” on the GSS Canvas Shell. This video must include voice narration (can be any voice) and be captioned (to be accessible). Your name and image do not need to be included on this portion of the submission (but can be included if you want). This video should 1) explain where idea for project came from, 2) what the project is, 3) major findings (as relevant), 4) explain why the project is important (e.g., what goals does it address), and 5) include a visual sample as appropriate.

Suggestions/Tips for the Video

Questions about the contest should be directed to gss@bgsu.edu with the subject line “Creative Expression Contest Inquiry”.

Note: A big thank you to Dr. Sarah Rainey-Smithback, Professor Kimberly Fleshman, and Professor Jenn Stucker for consulting on the design of this contest!

Judging criteria will focus on interdisciplinary communication, clarity, merit, comprehension, and professionalism. Judges for the paper presentation will consists of volunteer faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines and there will be three judges in each time slot allotted where they will evaluate about 3 to 5 participants. SEC members will be moderators and – if needed – judges.

Additionally, anybody who wishes to participate as a presenter will not be asked to judge for the same category they will be presenting their research. For example, if you are participating in the colloquium as a paper presenter, we will not ask you to judge for the paper presentation. However, if you are presenting a poster and wish to judge the paper panel, you will be considered to participate.
