Elizabeth Smart to share story at BGSU

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted as a teen and held captive for nine months, will be at Bowling Green State University next month to share “My Story,” a reference to the title of her newly released memoir about how she survived and forged a new life after her abduction.

Smart is the inaugural speaker for the BGSU University Libraries’ new Ordinary People, Extraordinary Stories series. The event at will be held at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The dinner starts at 7 p.m., with her presentation to follow at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the dinner and program are $50 per person. A pre-dinner reception with Smart will be held at 6 p.m.; the cost of the reception, dinner, program, signed book and VIP parking is $250.  

After the presentation Smart will sign books, which will be available for sale by the University Bookstore at the event.

Since her ordeal in 2002, Smart has transformed from victim to advocate and has dedicated much of her time to educating, inspiring and fostering change. Her foundation, the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, works to prevent crimes against children. Following the recent incident in which three young women were discovered in an urban Cleveland home, Smart has been back in the news, talking about childhood abductions.

The Ordinary People, Extraordinary Stories event is hosted by Bowling Green State University Libraries and its Advocates Board. Proceeds will help fund the libraries’ digitization projects.
