Math & Stats Resources

There are many different studying resources that exist for Mathematics and Statistics.  Listed below is a large collection of different websites that we have found that provide various resources that relate to Math and Stats skills.  These are not ordered in any particular way, so feel free to browse through the entire collection.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives

This website contains online manipulatives that are available in the Learning Commons.  These free manipulatives can be used for at-home practice.  For example, you can find pattern blocks for use in explaining fractions and base blocks in different bases.

Khan Academy

One tutor wrote, “This website is awesome for Math or any subject!  It contains video tutorials that cover topics like Linear Algebra, quadratics, polynomials, etc.  This website is free to utilize and you can setup an account either with Facebook or a Google account.  I could see students struggling in Geometry, Algebra, Calculus, and other Math courses using this to reinforce or learn the material.  It would be a great bonus to utilize as an outside resource.”

Wolfram Alpha

One tutor wrote, “I find this to be super helpful with Math homework.  It is easy to use and will help show how to work out problems for the students.  However, it should be used with caution.”  Wolfram Alpha is a very powerful website that can solve virtually any problem.  However, this tool is not available during quizzes and exams, so this website should be used for checking solutions only.  This website can also be used similar to Wikipedia or Ask.com.

Purple Math

This website contains many valuable features.  There are “Learning Forums," which are public forums to post questions and have mathematical conversations.  There is an entire section of lessons explaining concepts up through and including Precalculus.  Additionally, the site contains reviews of online tutoring resources, sample quizzes, and a guideline for completing homework in a format that your instructor will love.

MIT Open Courseware

This is a web-based publication of virtually all MIT course content.  It contains audio/video lectures, lecture notes, homework ( and solutions),an online textbook, and interactive simulations.  The topics covered include Algebra, Calculus, and Probability and Statistics.  This resource has value for both the student and the tutor, as the lessons can help explain concepts and the homework can provide additional practice problems.

Math TV

MathTV.com is a website similar to Khan Academy.  Through searching by topic, you can view video lessons by several different people on each topic.  Each sample question is explained by multiple people, so you can choose which presenter you wish to listen to.

Patrick JMT

This website “…has many videos that go from the basics of Algebra up through Calculus, Discrete, Linear Algebra, and more.”

Desmos

Probably the best free online graphing software available.  This is ideal to use with algebra students studying translations of functions and for Pre-Calculus students studying trigonometric functions.  The slider functions within the calculator allow significant manipulation by the user.
