Lamp Ceremony
In the first week of the semester, the School of Nursing welcomes rising Juniors beginning core nursing courses, and recognizes rising Seniors through the Welcome and Lamp Ceremony.
This Ceremony is an opportunity to network with fellow students, meet the entire faculty, as well as learn about student organizations and opportunities available.
The Seniors are presented with a Lamp of Learning. This lamp is a tradition in nursing education which harkens back to Florence Nightingale, who is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. She was known as "The Lady with the Lamp" as she tended to wounded soldiers throughout the night. The lamp remains a symbol of learning, knowledge, and caring.
