Information about Program and College

The Department of Computer Science is located within the College of Arts and Sciences. The College strives to foster and sustain an engaging culture of discovery, creativity, teaching, learning, and collaboration, enriched by a diversity of experiences and perspectives. We are especially interested in recruiting candidates who can contribute, through their teaching, scholarly/creative work, and/or service, to our efforts to meet the challenge of achieving inclusive excellence in our academic community. The College takes a cohort-based approach to faculty success, providing resources and support within the Dean’s Office and through collaboration with Arts and Sciences departments and schools, leadership teams in other colleges, and university-serving partners such as the Center for Faculty Excellence. Through these connections, we are developing comprehensive programming that supports the professional growth and advancement of faculty across all disciplines, ranks, and career stages. The Department currently has 14 full-time faculty members with national and/or international reputations, about 330 undergraduate majors, and 80 graduate students. Undergraduate students pursue baccalaureate degrees in computer science and software engineering and graduate students pursue a MS in Computer Science and in Data Science, and a Ph.D. in Data Science. The B.S. in Computer Science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. The B.S. in Software Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

The Department of Computer Science is one of the units that has been served by BGSU ALLIES, a three-year project funded by NSF that is designed to increase the participation and advancement of women in academic STEM careers. Paralleling similar efforts at the student level, the department sponsors the BG Women in Computing student organization, which became a student chapter of ACM-W in 2018. The department has also recently been awarded a $1.14 million scholarship fund from the State of Ohio and the Department of Higher Education to recruit high-achieving students from underrepresented groups.

Essential Functions

  • Teach a variety of courses, such as Programming, Data Structures, Algorithms, Database, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or Natural Language Processing effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels using inclusive pedagogies and course design with a student learning focus
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students
  • Actively seek and obtain external funding to sustain a research program that results in peer-reviewed journal articles or conference publications
  • Provide service at the department, college, university, professional, and community level

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in computer science, data science or a closely related discipline (e.g., Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics). ABDs will be considered if the requirements for the degree will be completed by August 2025
  • Teaching experience at the college level as a course instructor, teaching assistant, guest lecturer, or practicum instructor
  • Established research background in data science evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, reports, or scientific presentations at conferences or workshops

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience at the college level (course instructor, teaching assistant, guest lecturer, teaching practicum) in a course or courses mentioned above
  • Research grant experience (e.g., assisting grant proposal development, submitting federal or state grants)

Candidates invited for on-campus interviews must provide unofficial transcripts of the highest degree earned, evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., student evaluations of teaching, classroom observations), and a start-up proposal containing a list of required equipment and supplies with cost estimates.

Finalist will be required to submit official transcripts and written letters of reference. BGSU policy requires finalist to authorize and pass a background check prior to receiving an offer of employment.
