Loan Deferment Form Processing

Bowling Green State University partners with the National Student Clearinghouse for enrollment reporting. At various points throughout a semester, BGSU submits a report of student enrollment statuses to the Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse will provide verifications of enrollment to lending agencies along with reporting statuses to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS).

Most lending agencies that participate in the Clearinghouse also participate in the paperless deferment process. With this process, no paper forms need to be completed by the student or school – the student will call their lending agency to request a deferment. The lending agency will confirm the student’s enrollment status with the Clearinghouse and verify they are eligible for deferment under the lending agencies guidelines.

There are times where a loan deferment form may need to be filled out by the student and the University. If the student registered after the first enrollment report was sent to the Clearinghouse (1st day of the term) or stopped attending BGSU after a previous semester of enrollment, the enrollment status may not be reported to the Clearinghouse until the next enrollment file is submitted (approximately every 30 days).

If you receive communication from your lending agency and you believe you should be in a deferred status, please refer to the following instructions:

  • If you enrolled within the three days leading up to the term, or after the first day of the term, you will need to retrieve an Enrollment Verification Letter through your Student Center and send it to your lending agency. Refer to the instructions found under Obtaining Enrollment Verification through Student Center.
  • If your lending agency will not accept an Enrollment Verification Letter retrieved above, call your lending agency to see if they received a deferment form from the Clearinghouse after the lending agency sent their communication.
  • If after calling your lending agency and your deferment has not been processed, call the Clearinghouse at 703-742-4200. A Clearinghouse representative can verify the date they received the deferment form, when the deferment was certified, when your last enrollment status was certified, and to which lending agencies your enrollment status was reported.
  • If an emergency exists, the Clearinghouse can intervene on your behalf by faxing another enrollment verification to your lending agency. Further, it will work with your lending agency to ensure that the form is processed on a high-priority basis.
  • If you have completed all the above steps and your enrollment status at BGSU is not in a deferable status with the Clearinghouse, please send any loan deferment forms from lending agencies to registrar@bgsu.edu. The forms will need to be properly filled out with all Borrower Information (Section 1), Borrower Requests, Understandings, Certifications and Authorization (Section 3), the Borrower Signature on the 2nd page, and Where to Send the Completed Deferment Request (Section 7) completed.
