Meet the Dean: Dr. Wael Mokhtar to build on growing momentum in the BGSU College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering

Mokhtar brings more than two decades of experience in higher education to his new role as dean

Since the start of his career in higher education more than two decades ago, Dr. Wael Mokhtar has measured his success based on the achievements of his students — reveling in their transformations from young, eager college freshmen to thriving professionals in industry and academia.

Mokhtar’s commitment to student success remains steadfast as he settles into his new role as dean of the Bowling Green State University College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering (CTAAE), which houses many of the University’s in-demand degree programs in the growing fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“In higher education, you see the value of what you do every day in the success of your students,” Mokhtar said. “You work with them from the beginning, see their growth and development, and then watch them graduate and go on to solve complex problems and excel in industry. It’s very rewarding knowing you played a role in their success.”

Mokhtar joined BGSU at a pivotal time in the University’s history. Enrollment and retention reached record levels again this year, and BGSU was ranked among the nation’s best colleges for its unmatched student experience and education of value.

Deepening its commitment to meeting workforce needs, the School of Engineering within the CTAAE launched three reimagined degree programs that will prepare students for the ever-evolving industry through a focus on science and the application of engineering.

The BGSU CTAAE also achieved its own enrollment milestone, with a record-high 1,703 students for Fall 2024, up nearly 8% from last year.

“Students see the value of a BGSU education, and it’s clear that faculty members are dedicated to ensuring our students are highly qualified to enter the workforce,” Mokhtar said. “Our in-demand degree programs are also a draw, providing students with the reassurance of vast career opportunities upon graduation.”

To further elevate engineering education, BGSU has begun transforming the existing Technology Building into a top-tier learning space known as the Technology Engineering Innovation Center.

The renovated building, part of the overall BGSU Master Plan 2024, will include collaborative classrooms and adaptable space for cutting-edge robotics and engineering equipment and serve as the centerpiece of the campus' evolving STEM corridor.

“I am thrilled to experience firsthand the incredible momentum happening at BGSU,” Mokhtar said. “The new, state-of-the-art facility will ensure our students continue learning with the latest technology while providing new opportunities to collaborate with industry. There is a lot of energy in the college and many significant initiatives are already underway. My role as a strategic leader is to continue building on that momentum.”

Before joining BGSU, Mokhtar spent 15 years in various academic and administrative roles at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, most recently as the director of its School of Engineering.

In that role, he led multiple successful student recruitment and retention initiatives, including nearly doubling enrollment in the School of Engineering. Mokhtar also developed new engineering degree programs and led two successful ABET accreditations. 

Mokhtar holds a doctorate in aerospace engineering from Old Dominion University, and his research interests include computational fluid dynamics, wind tunnel testing, vehicle aerodynamics and teaching methods.
