Falcon News In Brief: BGSU Math Camp nationally awarded
Efforts by BGSU Math Camp will be recognized in D.C. on Oct. 26
BGSU Math Camp wins inaugural award from National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has recognized the excellent work conducted by the BGSU Math Camp, especially students Megan M. Recker, Alex N. Bajwa, Alexa M. Barrett and Ashley Marie Wallster as it awarded the camp the inaugural NCTM Affiliate Outreach and Engagement Award.
According to Associate Executive Director Dr. David Barnes, the BGSU Math Camp will be recognized on Oct. 26 during the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington. There will also be time set aside during the expo for a presentation to discuss the work of the BGSU Math Camp.
Barnes sent advance congratulations to members of the Bowling Green Council of Teachers of Mathematics, President Laney Ventimiglia, Recker and Dr. Gabriel Matney, stating, "Thank you for all you do to promote mathematics learning and teaching with students and those developing to be teachers."
During BGSU Math Camp, students engage in fun-filled experiences about teamwork, problem solving, mathematics, and the connections between mathematics and the real world, all in a camp-like atmosphere where there is song, dance and silliness. Each math camp is specifically designed by the pre-service teachers with oversight from the University's mathematics education faculty. Aligned with the Common Core and Ohio Learning Standards for Mathematics, Math Camp pre-service teachers work with each school's liaison to identify specific areas of mathematics need for the students in order to design a worthwhile and focused camp experience.
Founded in 1920, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is North America's largest mathematics education organization, and the BGSU Math Camp is recognized on behalf of the Membership and Affiliate Relations Committee.
