‘More Than War and Wine’
Art students work together to bring antiquities to BGSU

A group of BGSU art students is giving life to objects that date back thousands of years. Undergraduate graphic design students of Todd Childers and graduate-level art history students of Dr. Sean Leatherbury have joined forces to create an art exhibition called “More Than War and Wine: Anxiety and Relief in Antiquity.”

The special exhibition opened April 1 in the lobby of the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery in the Fine Arts Center. The distinctive collection features approximately 17 items that represent the daily lives of Egyptians, Babylonians, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans from as long ago as 800 B.C. The collection showcases everyday belongings such as part of a cosmetic case, pottery pieces and fragments of wine vessels, and explores some of the anxieties that may have influenced the creation of these ancient works of art.

The exhibition runs through April 15.  Today (April 7), the art history students will present an object talk from 1:30 to 4 p.m., to share their research insights on the various pieces. A special reception will follow at 4:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

All of the pieces are on loan from the Toledo Museum of Art, which generously allowed the art history students to research the artifacts for this one-time, one-of-a-kind show. While the art history students painstakingly studied the museum’s stored treasures, their work provided the background and information about the collection. The graphic design students were responsible for creating the three-dimensional design of the exhibition space, as well as the marketing pieces for the show.

The exhibition is made possible with the generous assistance of the Toledo Museum of Art, with additional support provided by the School of Art and the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President.
