Pro Musica hosts Bowling Green Chamber Music Competition

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Pro Musica will host the seventh annual Bowling Green Chamber Music Competition on Saturday (March 16) and Sunday (March 17) at Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts.

The preliminary round will begin at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, with the final round at 3 p.m. on Sunday. All events are in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.

Judges for the preliminary round are pianist Christopher Harding from the University of Michigan; Denise Root-Pierce from Eastern Michigan University and the horn player in the Eastern Winds Quintet, Essex Winds and Trio Abelia; and violinist Kathryn Votapek from UM and a member of the Chester String Quartet. Final round judges will be pianist James Howsmon from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, oboist Nancy Ambrose King from UM, and flutist Amy Porter from UM.

Douglas Wayland, BGSU adjunct associate professor of voice, serves once again as coordinator for the competition. Wayland, himself a BGSU alumnus, said he “looks forward to the competition each year. With over 60 students involved this year, the competition encourages our students to explore the chamber music repertoire and perform with other musicians in an intimate ensemble, which is very different from the large ensemble or solo performing experience. It also gives students the opportunity to perform and receive comments from some of the finest chamber music players in the Midwest.”

For nearly 30 years Pro Musica, funded by almost 300 dedicated alumni, friends, parents and members of the Bowling Green community, has sponsored a wide variety of musical events and provided financial support to music students for educational travel projects. In addition, the organization provides funding for scholarships and various awards at the college.

The event is free and open to the public.
