Arlington Midwest at BGSU to honor lives lost

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Bowling Green State University will have a chance to pause and consider “The Human Cost of 10 Years of War 2001-2011” during Arlington Midwest at BGSU Oct. 2-8. The memorial will be set up on the Bell Tower Lawn between Jerome Library and the Education Building

Arlington Midwest is a traveling exhibit created from recycled materials, and it’s a place to grieve for and honor those who’ve lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan the past decade. A volunteer workforce maintains the exhibit, which will include silent vigils and other events.

“We were familiar with this project and interested in bringing it to campus as part of the commitment to having critical conversations about important social and community issues,” said Dr. Jane Rosser, director of the Office of Service-learning. “We should really think about the human cost and honor those who have made that sacrifice.”

Two hundred volunteers are needed starting at 9 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 2) to help with the installation. Rosser said individuals, organizations, faculty, staff and the Bowling Green community can help with both the installation of the exhibit and its take-down at 9 p.m. Oct. 9.

Volunteers will finish naming over 6,000 tombstones from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday (Oct. 3), followed by a brief vigil. The next silent vigil will take place from noon-1 p.m. Oct. 6.

BGSU’s Office of Service-Learning, Peace and Conflict Studies and Resource Connection, along with organizations The Common Good and FREEDOM, are sponsoring Arlington Midwest.
