BGSU School of Art announces art winners
BOWLING GREEN, O.—The Bowling Green State University School of Art has announced the winners of the 2010 Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Thesis Exhibition. The exhibition is in the Dorothy Uber Bryan, Willard Wankleman and Bowen Thompson Student Union galleries until April 3.
The BFA show features current seniors who either graduated this past December or will be graduating this spring or summer 2010.
Sixty-three students majoring in graphic design, digital arts, 2D or 3D studies and art education were chosen by a jury of faculty members to participate in this year’s exhibition. Students were allowed to submit as many pieces as they liked, from which the jurors selected the pieces for the show. Besides choosing which pieces were accepted into the show, the faculty jurors also determined the recipients of the coveted James W. Strong Awards.
Those recipients were Chris Koelsch, a senior digital art major from Toledo; Michael Gump, a senior graphic design major from Garfield Heights; Madison Hartley, a senior 2D studies major from Huron; Jared Rosenacker, a senior 3D studies major from Cincinnati, and Ross Roadtruck, a senior 2D major also from Cincinnati.
This year the guest juror was Deborah Davis from the University of Toledo. She selected the winner of the Dominick and Elizabeth Labino Art and Technology Award from five nominees, along with the Main Street Photo Award and the Marietta Kirschner Wigg Print Award.
The recipient of the Dominick and Elizabeth Labino Art and Technology Award was “Watch Them As The Kill Themselves,” by Kevin Vaneck, a senior 3D studies major from Euclid. The Marietta Kirschner Wigg Print Award was given to Ashley Smith, a senior 2D studies major from Chicago, for her installation of collograph works. Chris Koelsch was also given the Main Street Photo Award for his installation of prints.
The Bowen-Thompson Student Union and the dean of Arts and Sciences also gave out several purchase awards to students. The dean awarded purchase prizes to Myra Sanderson, a senior digital art major from Swanton; Katie Brown, Katheryn Pepple, a senior 2D studies major from Rawson, and Adam Soboleski, a senior 3D studies major from Bowling Green.
The Bowen-Thompson Student Union awarded a purchase prize to “Blue Circles,” by Jessica Usio-Hoffman, a senior 2D studies major from Streetsboro. She also received the Medici Circle Purchase Award for “Blue Circles.” The Medici Circle is a community group that supports the activities at the School of Art.
