Assistantship needs may change during the course of the academic year. In some cases, more than one vacancy may exist for one of these positions.
Oboe (available Fall 2026)
The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, as well as double reed methods and other duties as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and successful teaching in studio and/or school settings. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
Bassoon (available Fall 2025)
The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, as well as double reed methods and other duties as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and successful teaching in studio and/or school settings. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
Flute (available Fall 2026)
The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, as well as flute methods and other duties as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and successful teaching in studio and/or school settings. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
Clarinet (available Fall 2026)

Trumpet Studio and Graduate Brass Quintet (available Fall 2025)
The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, and performs with the Graduate Brass Quintet. The GBQ performs each semester in University commencement exercises and presents concerts on and off campus as assigned. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and successful teaching in studio and/or school settings. This is a 3/8 position, requiring 13-15 hours of work per week.
Trumpet - Graduate Brass Quintet (available Fall 2026)
The student selected for this position performs with the Graduate Brass Quintet and in other duties as needed. The GBQ performs each semester in University commencement exercises and presents concerts on and off campus as assigned. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and successful teaching in studio and/or school settings. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
Horn Studio and Graduate Brass Quintet (available Fall 2026)
The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, and performs with the Graduate Brass Quintet. Tuba/Euphonium Studio and Graduate Brass Quintet (Available Fall 2026)
The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, and performs with the Graduate Brass Quintet. The GBQ performs each semester in University commencement exercises and presents concerts on and off campus as assigned. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Prerequisites include superior tuba performance ability and successful teaching in studio and/or school settings, including ability to teach euphonium at the undergraduate level. This is a 1/4 position, requiring 10 - 12 hours of work per week.
Percussion (available Fall 2025)
The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, as well as assisting with percussion methods and in other duties as needed. Prerequisites include excellent performance ability in all areas of percussion including keyboard, timpani, snare drum, and multiple-percussion. Successful teaching in studio and/or school settings is desired and knowledge of jazz drumset and ethnic percussion is helpful. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.

Graduate String Quartet—Cello (available Fall 2025)
The student selected for this position performs with the Graduate String Quartet and serves as a section leader in the Bowling Green Philharmonia (responsible for fingerings, bowings, sectionals, etc.) The GSQ typically presents one on-campus and two off-campus performances each semester and performs for selected University functions as assigned. Prerequisites include superior performance ability with experience in both chamber and orchestral settings. This is a ½ position, requiring 20 hours of work per week.
Studio-Voice (available Fall 2025)
Student selected for these positions provide applied private and para-voice class instruction. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and successful teaching in studio and/or school settings. Performance in an opera, if cast, is required. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
Choral Assistant (available Fall 2025)
Students selected for this position assist in the rehearsal and management of one or more choral ensembles as assigned by the Director of Choral Activities. Ensembles include the Collegiate Chorale, A Cappella Choir, Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus and the University Choral Society. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Prerequisites include superior musicianship and record of successful teaching. Registration for Collegiate Chorale and University Choral Society is required. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week. For choral conducting majors only.
Studio Piano/Piano Accompanying (available Fall 2025)
Students chosen for these positions will accompany bachelor’s and master’s recitals, and in vocal literature classes as assigned. Duties may also include applied instruction at early and intermediate levels. Prerequisites include superior performing and sight-reading ability, excellent communication skills, knowledge of piano repertoire at early and intermediate levels, and a record of successful accompanying. Registration in Collaborative Techniques or Piano Pedagogy is required during the first year. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
Orchestra Conducting Assistant (available Fall 2025)
Students selected for this position assist in the rehearsal and management of the Bowling Green Philharmonia. Typical duties include orchestra library, writing program notes, conducting rehearsals and sectionals, and orchestra set-up for rehearsal and concerts. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Prerequisites include superior musicianship and record of successful conducting experience. Registration for the BGSU Philhamonia is required. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week. For orchestral conducting majors only.
Jazz (available Fall 2025)
Students selected for this position assist with the jazz music library and grading and collation in one or more undergraduate jazz classes. Coaching undergraduate jazz performance ensembles is typical for students with extensive performance experience. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance jazz ability and organizational and computer skills. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
Guitar (available Fall 2026)
The student selected for this position teaches guitar classes for non-majors, and assists applied and small ensemble instruction. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and successful teaching in studio and/or school settings. Demonstration and/or explanation of concepts relating to teaching beginning and intermediate guitar will also be required. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
Trinity United Methodist Church Intern (available Fall 2025)
The position is available to pianists only for fall 2025 and requires a piano audition. Piano students with experience playing the organ are especially encouraged to apply and will be given priority. The student selected for this position will assist the music director in music outreach and preparation for the weekly services to include the following duties: recruit singers for the Chancel Choir, Praise Team, and guest soloists/ensembles for weekly music; perform administrative duties, including monitoring attendance of book scholarship recipients and prepare brief monthly reports for the Staff/Parish relations Committee; rehearse and perform with the Chancel Choir or Praise Team; attend and play for weekly Sunday services and special events. One evening per week must be free for assistantship activities, and the student must arrange for covering assistantship responsibilities during University breaks. Student should be highly motivated, organized, and able to anticipate needs early on. This is a ¼ position, requiring 10-12 hours of work per week.
