Gruenhagen and McClure Publish Article on Fostering Well-Being in General Music
Lisa Gruenhagen (Ph.D., ESM), Associate Professor of Music Education, and Anna McClure (MM, BGSU), Music Teacher at David Hill CLC, Akron Public Schools, co-authored the article “Fostering Well-Being in Elementary General Music” which was recently published in TRIAD, the cornerstone publication for the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA). This article is an extension of their clinic presented at the 2024 OMEA Professional Development Conference in Columbus, OH, and an outcome of their years-long school-university partnership. The first in a series of articles that focus on well-being, this article is grounded in the belief that “general music education, if practiced with intentionality, has the potential to be a passionate act of hope with tremendous implications for the academic, social, and emotional needs of students” (Varner, 2023, p. 34). Gruenhagen and McClure’s research on professional development and teacher research in the music classroom focuses also on the well-being of teachers, offering ideas for engaging in reflective practices to help them determine the types of activities and experiences that will foster personal well-being and connection with their students.
