G-Decker-Headshot-2022

Dr. Greg Decker (professor, music theory) as been awarded a prestigious publication award by the Society for Music Theory, the primary academic society for the study of music theory and analysis internationally. Decker's publication Here for the Hearing: Analyzing the Music in Musical Theater (University of Michigan Press, 2023) won SMT's Outstanding Multi-Author Collection publication award. He shares the award with co-editor Michael Buchler (Florida State University) and the other scholars whose work appears in the volume. The book is the first of its kind and brings together eleven analytical essays that apply cutting-edge analytical techniques to the musical theater and Broadway repertoire. The awards committee had this to say about the publication:

"Here for the Hearing: Analyzing the Music in Musical Theater is a pioneering volume that offers a remarkably coherent vision of how a hitherto under-represented genre might be analyzed. It takes in its scope not just a range of works across a broad historical span, but reflects critically on stylistic divergence within that field. By means of careful ordering of chapters, sensitive cross referencing and above all a shared love and respect for the subject matter, this is a serious, compelling and eminently readable volume. Available by Open Access, it will doubtless become a landmark text in the field for teaching and research."

Decker previously won SMT's Citation of Special Merit publication award for his co-edited volume Singing in Signs: New Semiotic Explorations of Opera (Oxford University Press, 2020).
