Bless the past. Greet the future.

Invictus
arr. Joshua Rist (b. 1989)
Elaine Colprit, Cello

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance,
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
finds and shall find, me unafraid .
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Veni Domine
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

Veni Domine et noli tardare!
Relaxa facinora plebi tuae,
Et revoca dispersos interam tuam.
Excita Domine potentiam tuam,
Et veni ut salvos nos facias.

Come, Lord, and do not delay
Come and free Thy people from their misdeeds
And bring back the dispersed to your land
Raise up, Lord, Thy power
And make us safe

Primary Colors II. Living
Kathleen Allan (b.1989)
Mackenzie Jones, soloist

Be blue, a blue of fathomless, a spray of far,
a gleam of absent sunlight highs and glittering echoings,
Grab the empty edge of skies, swing wide,
and plunge to blanching presences.
Now write your hieroglyphs on snowman’s letterhead,
Dictate your glaciers to sleeping space, compose an orange song
And circle it with canticles of blue;
Pack up the forest and consign its hundred owlish eyes
to earth in nailed crates of night
Or slide some measured two-by-fours through open window frames;
Then wake the dreaming dead and touch their breath with stars dreaming,
Before you leave sweep the blue sawdust up into a heap,
And with clean brushes scatter it through a thousand radiant doors.

Blind to the Illness
Shara Nova (b. 1974)/arr. Emma Zemancik
Kathryn Mahoney, Emma Zemancik, percussion

power to ignore
power to walk away
power to defend
power to drive as fast as I can
power to pretend
power to see myself reflected
power to get in
power to believe I can do anything
I do not worry at night
I do not worry by day
I do not think about these things
I just go on my way
I see no color
how about you
but I’m blind to the illness
I was born inside this building
and I want to see the sun
I want out of the building getting out of this
building
I’m going blind
going blind with that illness
I wanna see color
Nature is the truest law on all the sun does shine
In every part of the one the other is entwined
Oh! The sun ‘n me are made of the same thing
Everything so beautifully in color

Primary Colors III. Dying
Kathleen Allan (b. 1989)
William Hermanowski, conductor

Yellow who are you?
Tu-whit tu-whoo and you are you.
Yellow you are the sounds horizons,
its early orisons unpacked from vats of dew.
And yellow you are the golden bar across the topmost star.
You are also the fertile toad of the yellow swollen;
The shrunken pearl of the loudly yellow night.

Wanting Memories from Crossings
Ysaÿe M. Barnwell (b. 1946)
Kourtney Hill, conductor
Jenna Hainer, Mackenzie Jones, Madeline Kissinger, Emily Thornton and Cassidy Vanscoy, small group

I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me
To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes
I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me
To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes

You used to rock me in the cradle of your arms
You said you'd hold me till the pains of life were gone
You said you'd comfort me in times like these and now I need you
Now I need you, and you are gone

I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me
To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes
Since you've gone and left me, there's been so little beauty
But I know I saw it clearly through your eyes

Now the world outside is such a cold and bitter place
Here inside I have few things that will console
And when I try to hear your voice above the storms of life
Then I remember all the things that I was told

I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me
To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes
I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me
To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes

I think on the things that made me feel so wonderful when i was young
I think on the things that made me laugh, made me dance, made me sing
I think on the things that made me grow into a being full of pride
I think on these things, for they are true

Starting Now
Jocelyn Hagen (b. 1980)

It is time for us to wake:
We who stumble through the day with our gripes and complaints,
Who drift numbly through thronging halls and streets
You and I, who rant about injustice,
Who see all that is wrong in this world
But believe we are shackled and powerless.
You and I, it is time to look into each other’s faces,
We who glide along the surface,
Time to dive down and feel the currents of each other's lives.
Time to speak until the air holds all of our voices.
Time to weave for each other a garment of brightness.
It is time for us to wake: Open your eyes.
Feel your strength. Bless the past. Greet the future.
Join hands. Right here. Our moment: starting now.

Beautiful iris, yellow and white,

When Music Sounds | Connor J. Koppin (b. 1991)
Text: Walter John de la Mare (1873-1956)

When music sounds, gone is the earth I know,
And all her lovely things even lovelier grow;
Her flowers in vision flame, her forest trees
Lift burdened branches, stilled with ecstasies.

When music sounds, out of the water rise
Naiads whose beauty dims my waking eyes,
Rapt in strange dreams burns each enchanted face,
With solemn echoing stirs their dwelling-place.

When music sounds, all that I was I am
Ere to this haunt of brooding dust I came;
And from Time's woods break into distant song
The swift-winged hours, as I hasten along.

Flight from “The Greatest of These” | Daniel Elder (b. 1986)
Text: Daniel Elder

A flash of wonder from eternal height,
I give anew to all the world its sight;
A blinding rush of colors all alight,
To see full well the sum of joys in flight.

Amazing Grace | traditional hymn, arr. Robert T. Gibson (b. 1989)
Text: John Newton (1725-1807)

Logan Gutierrez, baritone
Federico Orlando, violin
Hayley Currin, cello

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch; like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come;
‘Twas grace that brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home.

Sing, My Child | Sarah Quartel (b. 1982)
Text: Sarah Quartel

B. Michael Perry & Jake Grafitti, tenors
Charles Ligus, percussion

Sing for the promise
In each new morning.
Sing for the hope
In a new day dawning.

All around is beauty bright!
Wake in the morning
And sing, my child,
Sing, my child.

Dance in the joy
Of the day unfolding.
Dance as you work
And dance as you're learning.

All around is beauty bright!
Take to the day
And dance, my child,
Dance, my child.

But when troubles come
And worry is all that can be found
Gather your strength and hear your voice.
Sing, my child.

Laugh in the cool
And fresh of the ev'ning
Laugh in your triumph
Laugh in succeeding.

All around is beauty bright!
Rest in the ev'ning
And laugh, my child.

Peace in the stillness
And dark of the night
Peace in the dreams
Of your silent delights.

All around is beauty bright!
Sleep in the night
And peace, my child,
Peace, my child.

But when troubles come
And worry is all that can be found
Gather your strength and hear your voice.
Sing, my child.

Sing, my child.
Dance, my child.
Laugh, my child.
Peace, my child.

Good Timber | Susan LaBarr (b. 1981)
Text: Douglas Malloch (1877-1938)

The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light,
But stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain,
Never became a forest king
But lived and died a scrubby thing.
Good timber does not grow with ease:
The stronger wind, the stronger trees;
The further sky, the greater length;
The more the storm, the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow.
Where thickest lies the forest growth,
We find the patriarchs of both.
And they hold counsel with the stars
Whose broken branches show the scars
Of many winds and much of strife.
This is the common law of life.

I’ll Be On My Way | Shawn Kirchner (b. 1970)
Text: Shawn Kirchner

Aaron Roos, baritone
Federico Orlando, violin
Hayley Currin, cello
Ryan Spiess, double bass
Charles Ligus, percussion

When I am gone, don’t you cry for me,
Don’t you pity my sorry soul.
What pain there might have been will now be past
And my spirit will be whole.

I’ll be on my way
I’ll have left my feet of clay upon the ground
I will be glory bound
I’ll be on my way

When I am gone, please forgive my wrongs
That I might have done to you;
There’ll be no room regrets up there,
High above, way beyond the blue.

I’ll be on my way
I’ll have laid my frown and all my burdens down
I’ll be puttin’ on my crown,
I’ll be on my way.

When I am gone, don’t you look for me
In the places I have been;
I’ll be alive, but somewhere else,
I’ll be on my way again!

I’ll be on my way,
I will lift my wings and soar into the air,
There’ll be glory ev’rywhere,
I’ll be on my way!

Traditional Songs of the BGSU Men's Chorus

Brothers, Sing On! | Edvard Greig (1843-1907), arr. Howard D. McKinney
Text: Herbert Dalmas

Come and let our swelling song
Mount like the whirling wind,
As it meets our singing throng,
So Blithe of heart and mind

Care and sorrow
now be gone
Brothers,
sing on!

Forward Falcons! | Wayne Bohrnstedt, Gilbert Fox, & Edith Ludwig Bell, arr. Will Baughman (b. 1993)

Aaron Roos, conductor

Forward Falcons!
Fight for victory.
BGSU!
Show our spirit.
Make them fear it.
Fight for ol’ BG

Forward Falcons!
Make the contest keen.
Hold up the fame
Of our mighty name
And win for Bowling Green

When all is but a memory
Of the bygone days
We’ll remember them always,
Those good ol’ by gone days

Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Zoomba
Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Ze
Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Zoomba
Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Ze
Roll along you BG warriors
Roll along and win for BGSU!

Alma Mater | Edith Ludwig Bell (1929-1988), arr. John M. Hyde

Alma mater hear us
As we praise thy name.
Make us worthy sons and daughters
Adding to thy fame.

Time will treat you kindly
And some years from now you’ll be
Ever dearer to our hearts,
Our University

From the halls of Ivy
Over to the campus scene,
Chimes ring out with gladness
For our dear Bowling Green.

When all is but a memory
Of the bygone days,
Hear our hymn dear Alma mater
As thy name we praise.
