Grüss (Op. 63, No. 3) | Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Wohin ich geh’ und schaue,
In Feld und Wald und Tal,
Vom Hügel hin auf die Aue,
Vom Berg aufwärts weit in’s Blaue:
Grüss’ ich dich tausend mal.
In meinem Garten find’ ich
Viel Blumen schön und fein;
Viel Kränze wohl d’raus wind’ ich,
Und tausend Gedanken bind’ ich,
Und Grüsse mit darein.
Dir darf ich keinen reichen,
Du bist zu hoch und schön,
Sie müssen zu bald verbleichen,
Die Liebe ohne Gleichen
Bleibt ewig im Herzen steh’n.
Wherever I walk and gaze,
Through valley, wood and field,
From mountaintop to meadow,
I, lovely gracious lady,
Greet you a thousand times.
I seek out in my garden
Many fine and lovely flowers,
Weaving many garlands,
Binding a thousand thoughts
And greetings with them too.
I cannot give a garland
To her, so high and fine,
Which means that all must perish,
Only love without compare
Stays in the heart forever

Where there is charity and love, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us revere and love the living God, and from a sincere heart let us love one another.
Ave verum corpus | Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Hail, true body, born of the Virgin Mary, who has truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mortals; whose side was pierced, whence flowed water and blood. Be for us a foretaste [of heaven] during our final examining.
Gypsy Songs
Ziguenerlieder, op. 103 (excerpts) | Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
5. Brauner Bursche führt zum Tanze
The bronzed lad leads his lovely, blue-eyed sweetheart to the dance. He kicks his spurs together boldly as the Czardas melody begins, kisses and caresses his sweet little dove, whirls her, leads her, shouts and leaps for joy, and throws three shiny silver guilders on the cymbal, making it ring.
6. Röslein dreie in der Reihe blühn so rot
Three little roses in a row bloom so red. For the lad to visit his lass is not forbidden! Dear God, if that were forbidden, this beautiful, wide world would have perished long ago; to remain unmarried would be a sin! The most beautiful town in Alföld is Ketschkemet. There are many girls there who are pretty and nice. Friends, seek for yourself a little bride there; ask for her hand and make a home!
9. Weit und breit schaut niemand mich an
Far and wide no one notices me, and if they hate me, what do I care? Only my darling shall love me always, shall kiss me, embrace, and caress me forever. Not a single star shines in the dark night, not a single flower blooms in fragrant splendor. To me, your eyes are flowers and starlight that shine so kindly on me and bloom for me alone.
From the Middle East
Talaa Min Bayt Abuha | Nazem Naim (b. 1925), arr. Shireen Abu-Khader (b. 1992)
From her father’s house she was going to the neighbor’s house. She passed me without even saying hello. Maybe the pretty one is angry with me. I told her: “quench my thirst and show me your eyes.” She said: “Go away you poor thing. My eyes are those of a gazelle.”
Zan, Zendegi, Azadi | Farzad Omidi (contemporary, Iran)
Woman, Life, Freedom
Hava Nageela | Israeli Folk Song, arr. Maurice Goldman (1910-1984)
