Fritz Kaenzig served as Principal Tubist of the Florida Symphony Orchestra (Orlando) and as additional or substitute tubist with Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, the Mariinsky Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Detroit, Houston, San Francisco, and St. Louis, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic under such conductors as Bernstein, Dudamel, Haitink, Boulez, Leinsdorf, Ozawa, Salonen, and Slatkin. He has recorded and performed as soloist with several of these orchestras, as well as appearing as soloist with the U.S. Air Force and Navy Bands. During the summers from 1984-2018, Mr. Kaenzig was Principal Tubist in the Grant Park Orchestra (Chicago). Kaenzig has performed in ensembles backing up artists as widely varied as Alan Ginsberg, Luciano Pavarotti, and the Moody Blues.
Professor of tuba and euphonium at the University of Michigan from 1989-2020, he previously held faculty positions at the University of Illinois and the University of Northern Iowa. He was a member of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and received degrees from The Ohio State University where he studied with Robert LeBlanc, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with extensive studies also with Arnold Jacobs. Mr. Kaenzig is a past president of the Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association (now ITEA).
Professor Kaenzig’s students have earned positions in orchestras, military bands, and universities throughout the USA, Europe, and Japan. His students regularly won national and international solo competitions and two former students were awarded Fulbright Scholarships to study abroad. The U-M honored Prof. Kaenzig with a Harold Haugh Award for outstanding studio teaching, and he was also chosen to receive an Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship, recognizing his success in undergraduate teaching. He was awarded an Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Ohio State University and has been honored by receiving the International Tuba & Euphonium Association Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award.
