On-Campus Policies
You are responsible know and follow the policies outlined in the BGSU Community Living Standards and Student Code of Conduct. Each of these documents and more can be found on the Dean of Students Page.
Railroad Crossing Guidelines
Ohio State Law prohibits the crossing of railroad tracks except at designated street crossing areas where the road intersects with the railroad such as at Merry Street. Failure to cross at appropriate intersections could result in being assessed a fine and a city ticket.
Room Inspections
Room inspections will occur three times each semester. RAs will notify you 48-hours in advance of when they will enter your space. You are expected to follow all rules as outlined in the Community Living Standards. Student in violation of University Policies will be documented and will have to meet with the Hall Director.
Emergency Procedures
It is important for students living on campus to know what to do incase of emergencies. Your Hall Staff is there to help if you have any questions regaurding specific emergency procedures in your hall.
Fire
If you have a fire in your room, call 911 immediately.
Fire drills are scheduled periodically during normal working hours in University residences in compliance with state regulations. Every time the fire alarm sounds it must be treated as a real fire and you must evacuate immediately. All persons must vacate the residence any time the fire alarm is sounded or an emergency situation arises that requires the evacuation of the building. All individuals in the building must follow the directions of the staff and other emergency personnel and may not re-enter the building until the supervisor of the residence gives permission. University, state or city officials may enter rooms to verify evacuation of residents.
Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, sprinklers, and fire alarm systems are there for the protection of residents and should be treated with the well-being of all residents in mind. All fire safety equipment (e.g., pull stations, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, sprinklers) should be used for emergency purposes only. Smoke detectors and sprinklers throughout the residence hall are not to be disconnected or covered under any circumstances, nor should anything be hung from them. Tampering with fire safety equipment is a crime and will result in University conduct action, possible criminal action, fines, and fees.
Tornado
A tornado warning indicates that a tornado has been sighted in the area. Should residents hear the county tornado warning sirens or otherwise be advised that there is a tornado warning in effect for the region, residents are to seek shelter immediately and follow the directions of Office of Residence Life staff regarding emergency evacuation and remain in the shelter areas until the all-clear is given by the appropriate staff member or official. Please Note: Wood County conducts a test of tornado sirens on the first Saturday of every month at 10 a.m.
It is important for you to know the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning.
Conditions are conducive to the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area. When a Tornado Watch is issued:
- Listen to local radio and TV stations for further updates.
- Be alert to changing weather conditions. Blowing debris or the sound of an approaching tornado may alert you. Many people say it sounds like a freight train.
A tornado has actually been sighted by spotters or indicated on the radar and is occurring or imminent in the warning area. When a Tornado Warning is issued:
- If you are inside, go to the lowest floor in the building.
- If you are not able to go to the lowest point in the building, head to an internal room. The bathroom or closets are usually the safest.
- Adopt the tornado safety position with your arms over your head, in a crouched position on the ground. It is best to bring a blanket to cover yourself in case of broken glass.
