The Department of Psychology offers program leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.  All of the program areas are research oriented. The Clinical and Industrial/Organizational Programs provide training in applied areas in addition to research.

Program(s) Offered
Ph.D. in Psychology with specialization in Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or Experimental Psychology (Neural & Cognitive Sciences).

MA in Psychology with specialization in Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or Experimental Psychology (Neural & Cognitive Sciences)

Students are admitted to a Ph.D. program areas in psychology only. Graduate students earn the M.A. as a component of the Ph.D. program.

Accreditation
Our doctoral program in clinical psychology has been accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1971.

Prerequisites to Graduate Work
It is recommended that applicants should have taken an introductory psychology course and a course in statistics.  Credit in a related field or pertinent experience count toward this minimum if approved by the department.

Admission Procedure
Applicants seeking admission to the graduate programs in Psychology should follow the instructions outlined in the Graduate Admission section of this Graduate Catalog.  All application materials should be sent to the Graduate Admissions Office. A complete application must be received application deadlines which are: December 1 for Industrial/Organizational Psychology, December 15 for Clinical Psychology, and January 1 for Experimental (Neural & Cognitive Sciences) and Developmental Psychology.

Degree Requirements

Master of Arts
Candidates must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate credit.  Students are required to take a department approved methodology course (e.g. PSYC 6280 – Clinical Research Methods; PSYC 7800 – I/O Research Methods; PSYC 6870 – Research Methods) and at least two statistical courses (PSYC 6670 and PSYC 6680).

Doctor of Philosophy
Candidates must complete a minimum of 60 semester hours beyond the masters or 90 semester hours beyond the baccalaureate.  Students specializing in clinical psychology are required to complete a full-time one year clinical internship at a remote site.    In addition to coursework and applied experience (for Clinical and Industrial/Organizational students), the M.A. thesis, preliminary research project or exam, and the dissertation are central to the student’s plan of study.  .  The individual plan of study for each student is developed in collaboration with the student’s sponsor and other involved faculty such as program area coordinators and the psychology graduate coordinator.   For more detailed information about courses, research, and degree requirements, please consult the psychology department webpage and graduate handbook.
