Increasing Loan Options
Students currently enrolled in an aviation course with flight fees, can increase their Parent's Parent PLUS Loan and/or Private Loan amounts. Below you will find steps on how to increase different loan types.
Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Student Loan amounts are limited based on the student's academic level. That means the amount the student is offered is typically the maximum they are able to borrow from the federal government. The amount of the loan eligibility can be found on the student's MyBGSU > Financial Aid after filing for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Parent PLUS Loans amounts are based on the student’s tuition and fees. Because Aviation Studies students have higher fees, SFA is able to increase the amount of a Parent PLUS Loan.
Please follow the steps below if you would like to increase your Parent PLUS loan. SFA recommends applying for the Parent PLUS loan in late June or early July to allow amount flexibility for the spring semester.
- Register and be enrolled in the appropriate aviation course with additional fees
- Contact SFA to have the budget increased
- Parent Completes PLUS Application at https://studentaid.gov > Parent Borrowers > Apply for Parent PLUS Loan
- If parent is approved, they will need to complete the PLUS Master Promissory Note.
- BGSU SFA certifies the loan and can be viewed in student's MyBGSU > Financial Aid > Select Aid Year.
For the spring semester, once the student is enrolled in the appropriate courses, the parent can call SFA to have the loan amount adjusted.
Private Loan amounts operate the same as Parent PLUS Loans, the maximum amount you are able to borrow depends on the student’s tuition and fees. Please follow the steps below if you would like to increase your Private loan.
- Register and be enrolled in the appropriate aviation course with additional fees
- Contact SFA to have budget increased
- Apply for desired private loan. Elm Select
- Complete the Private Loan Questionnaire found by logging into the student’s MyBGSU > Student Center > Action Items > To-Do list
- BGSU SFA certifies private loan
For the spring semester, once the student is enrolled in the appropriate courses, you will be required to reapply for a spring private loan.
Other Financial Aid
Because grants are based on the information that was provided on the FAFSA, Student Financial Aid & Scholarships (SFA), is unable to adjust the amount of any grants for the additional flight fees.
Similar to grants, Work Study is based on the information that was provided on the FAFSA. However, a student may be able to work beyond the amount that was offered on their award letter. To do this, the student would need to contact both their on-campus employer and SFA.
