Where to begin?

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first step in receiving financial aid for the upcoming year. We know that the FAFSA may be challenging, but we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Follow the steps below to get started.

Have you already completed a FAFSA? You can skip to Step 3.

Step 1: Create your Student and Parent FSA ID

Every Student is required to create a FSA ID. This is your login for the FAFSA. Because this login will be used each year you apply for financial aid, remember to use your personal email address not your high school email address. Write it down and keep it safe, you won’t want to lose this information.

Because most students will be required to include parent information on their FAFSA, most parents will also need to create their own FSA ID.

Be sure to use different emails and phone numbers for each FSA ID.

Step 2: Verify your FSA ID email and phone number

Once you have created your FSA ID, you will be given the choice to verify your email and phone number. We recommend verifying both, this will make logging into the FAFSA easier.

Step 3: Apply for the FAFSA

If you are filing the FAFSA for the first time, select “Start Here”. If you have already completed a FAFSA or are a returning user, select “Log In”.

Don't forget to add BGSU as one of your schools of choice! Each student is able to include up to 10 schools on their FAFSA. BGSU School Code: 003018

Many families have the ability to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to enter their tax information. If this is an option, we highly recommend utilizing it – this will reduce your risk of being selected for verification.

Step 4: Submit the FAFSA

If the student is a Dependent student, meaning they submitted parent information on the FAFSA, both the parent(s) and student must sign the FAFSA.

If the student is an Independent student, meaning they did not include parent information on the FAFSA, only the student must sign the FAFSA.

Once the FAFSA has been successfully submitted, the student will receive an email and their FAFSA Submission Summary. Please allow up to 3 days to receive this email.

Step 5: Check your MyBGSU in the Spring

Students will receive an email indicating when they have received their financial aid for the upcoming year. Please keep in mind that Incoming Freshman and Continuing Students will receive their Financial Aid offers at different times.

To view your financial aid offers, login to your MyBGSU Student Center.
