2019 Recap
A total of 18 high school teams and 16 middle school/junior high teams competed in the Northwest Ohio Regional held at Bowling Green State University on March 9, 2019. For the fifth year in a row Sylvania Northview High school and McCord Junior High captured Northwest Ohio regional titles for Division C (High School) and Division B (Middle School), respectively, Both schools now have won this regional competition every year since it started at BGSU in 2015.
Northview set a new C division record score of 51 points, which makes an average of about 2nd place for the 23 individual events. Also impressive was Northview’s second team coming in 2nd overall with a score of 114. Northview team 2 was followed closely behind Ottawa Hills (121), Springfield (123), Sylvania Southview (138) and Shawnee (138). Each of these five schools qualified for the Ohio State Science Olympiad, where they faced some of the nation’s toughest competition the following month, including the 2nd and 4th place teams from the 2018 national tournament, Mason and Solon High Schools.
In the B division, McCord won the title with an excellent score of 69, just one point short of their own record from 2015 when there were only 12 teams in the competition. The three other schools that qualified for the state competition were Arbor Hills Jr. High (101), Timberstone Jr. High (140) and Springfield Middle School (147). Just as in the C division, the state of Ohio boasts some of the best teams in the nation in the B division, including 2018 National Champion Solon Middle School.
Finally, we bid farewell to tournament director and Physics Department Chair John Laird, who brought the Olympiad to BGSU in 2015. We thank Dr. Laird for his hard work and leadership in running this competition for the past five years.
