Initial Appointment Information
What to Expect
Coming to the Counseling Center for an initial appointment may be an unfamiliar process, and it's common for students to have questions or worries about what to expect. The following links walk you through the general process of an initial appointment.
Once you arrive at the Counseling Center, tell our front desk staff that you have arrived for an initial appointment. Please bring your BGSU student ID as it will be needed to verify your identity.
Prior to meeting with a clinician, you will complete consent forms and introductory questionnaires via a computer or tablet. We will be collecting information related to a variety of mental health concerns and what you are hoping to address by connecting to services. Completing these forms typically takes folx 15-20 minutes.
After your forms are completed, you will wait for a clinician to come for you and discuss your information further.
During the initial appointment, a counselor will be identifying your reasons for seeking counseling, goals for treatment, and other relevant information. The counselor will help you identify the best course of treatment for your concerns and needs. This could include drop-in groups, therapy groups, short-term individual or couples therapy, workshops, or referrals. Our ultimate goal is to get students connected to the best mental health resource(s) based on their mental health needs.
After the initial appointment, you will follow through with a plan for services that you created with the counselor during the initial consultation. This may involve meeting with a counselor again based on the agreed recommendations, or it may involve other services or referrals. To view a list of services that are offered, please visit our Services Offered page.
