Snow Removal
The Campus Operations Grounds Department is responsible for snow and ice removal during the winter season, ensuring safe travel on campus for students, faculty, staff, and guests. This includes clearing sidewalks, parking lots, service drives, and loading docks. Efforts are focused on making campus safe and accessible before classes start and throughout the day.
Implementation
During regular hours (6:30 am – 3:00 pm), the Grounds Superintendent or their designee initiates the snow and ice removal process. After hours, the BGSU Police Officer in Charge determines when removal efforts should begin, notifying the Grounds Superintendent to start the process.
Weather Forecasting
Effective weather forecasting is crucial for snow and ice control. In partnership with BGSU Emergency Management, weather monitoring begins as early as possible to assess weather impacts and assist in planning snow and ice control efforts.
Initiation of Efforts
Snow and ice removal follow a priority-based schedule:
- Priority One (Critical): These are the essential pathways (sidewalks, roads, loading docks) necessary for safe campus operations. The focus is on ensuring safe travel to all buildings.
- Priority Two (Necessary): As the storm subsides, efforts shift to less critical but still necessary pathways, providing safer access and mobility.
- Priority Three (Beneficial): These areas improve accessibility but are addressed only after the more critical pathways are cleared.
During heavy or prolonged storms, Priority One paths are the focus, followed by Priority Two. Beneficial paths, or Priority Three, are serviced once the storm ends. Initial servicing includes clearing paths for safety, with more detailed work performed as time allows.
Special Events
For scheduled performances, athletic events, or other special events, BGSU Grounds will accommodate facilities as weather permits. Event hosts should submit a work order with event details (location, event time, parking plans) in case of impending weather.
