Graduation Application

Graduation - All students need to apply for graduation. This will initiate your college office and the Office of Registration and Records to review your academic information to determine if degree requirements are being met.

Undergraduate students should consult with your college office and graduate students should consult with your graduate coordinator before applying for graduation.

How to Apply?

Go to your Student Center in MyBGSU

  • Click on the Degree Progress tile
  • Click on the Apply for Graduation from the left-hand navigation area
  • Select Academic Program from which you are applying to graduate
  • Select the term you are applying for from the drop down menu
  • Click Continue then Submit

A splash page will be displayed, please print this page as your proof that you applied and for information regarding your diploma name and other important information.

There will be a $35 graduation fee charged to your Bursar’s account.  This is a one-time non-refundable fee charged once when you apply as an undergraduate, and once when you apply as a graduate student.  

You will also receive an email from graduation@bgsu.edu the day after you apply.  The email will include the name which will appear on your diploma and the address which your diploma will be mailed.  If either of these are not correct, you will need to update this information through your MyBGSU.  See below for steps to make appropriate changes.

NOTE: Graduation with honors includes all work completed at BGSU (including work completed as a high school student or for which academic forgiveness was applied) and undergraduate work completed at other accredited institutions whether the work transfers or not, applies toward the degree or not, or was completed as a high school student

Degree Audit

Your degree audit will show that you have applied for graduation once your application has been processed. You can review your degree audit through your MyBGSU.  Please review your degree audit to determine if your degree requirements are being met. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor or program coordinator if they have any questions regarding meeting degree requirements by the end of the application term.

Graduation Application Deadlines

Spring October 15 At Midnight, the Sunday of the second week of the term

For all terms, students have until the end of the day Friday, four weeks after the end of the term to complete all degree requirements and have all items submitted to their college office.

If you have missed the deadline to apply for graduation, contact your college office to determine next steps.

It is the student’s responsibility to make sure ALL degree requirements are met by the deadline for the term in which they intend to graduate. If requirements are not met by the deadline, the student will need to reapply for next graduation term in which all degree requirements will be met.

Diploma Name

Your diploma will have your Legal Name as listed in your MyBGSU. Your diploma will have your legal name unless you submit a diploma name through your Student Center in the MyBGSU portal. Students who prefer to have their chosen name printed on their diploma MUST submit their chosen name as their diploma name. To create your diploma name, please go to MyBGSU and perform the following steps.

  • Click on the Student Center card
  • Click on the Profile tile
  • Click on Personal Details
  • Click on the “+” symbol and choose “Diploma” as the name type to add
  • Enter your name as you wish it to print on your diploma
  • Click SAVE

The name needs to be updated by the end of the term in which you plan to graduate to print on the diploma. If you wish the diploma name to be used for the printed Commencement Program and announcer cards for the Commencement Ceremony, name changes should be processed immediately after submitting your application. There is no guarantee that name changes processed after the 6th week of the semester will be able to be included in the program or on the announcer card.

NOTE: Diplomas will have the specific degree you earned printed, but major and minor information will be printed on your transcript.

Diploma Mailing

Digital diplomas will be available 1 week after the verification of completion of degree requirements and confirmation of any type of academic honor.  You will receive notification from Parchment when you can access the digital diploma.  Once you receive your digital diploma notification, your printed diploma will be mailed within 2 weeks.

Printed diplomas will be mailed to your Home Address as listed in your MyBGSU.  If changes need to be made, please go to MyBGSU.

  • Click on the Student Center card
  • Click on the Profile tile
  • Click on Addresses
  • Select the home address type and make any necessary changes
  • Click SAVE

The address needs to be updated by the end of the term in which you plan to graduate.

NOTE: If you have any outstanding financial obligations, your diplomas will not be released until these have been paid in full.

Duplicate Diplomas

Duplicate diplomas may only be ordered by the student who earned the diploma. If a student needs a duplicate diploma they can submit a replacement or duplicate diploma request here.

Withdraw from Graduation

If you are unable to graduate for the term in which you have applied, email graduation@bgsu.edu from your BGSU email account and notify your college office.  Please include your name, BGSU ID, and the degree, along your intent to withdraw from graduation in the email.
